05:50, 32f, overcast. roosters crowing. turned off dripping spigots. hay to all. fed chickens. made lunch. oatmeal.
09:00, 36F, mid tide falling on the suwannee river. low catches today. two net sets that pulled in nothing at all. water temps, mid to upper 40's depending on the location. sampled the back creeks, then went off shore for a quick trawl since the wind laid down for a bit. it was cold all day. lots of flocks of ducks out on the reefs. otherwise, brown and white pelicans and oodles of cormorants. 1 osprey perched on a nest. starkly beautiful out there - striations of wind driven foam offshore. inshore, vast golden spartina meadows. not for the faint-hearted the winter sea/landscapes of the suwannee delta but worth every shivering minute.
14:00, 50F at back door. pup glad to see me. guardian waiting for the truck by the corral. good dogs! all quiet in the sheep barn.
21:20, 49F, breezy from the NE. overcast. waxing gibbous moon faint in the western sky. no stars. fed dogs. balmy out. chilly inside. good night dear moon.

05:30, 29F, clear. stars showing. cold, sick lamb in barn. hot water bottles and blanket and a warm sip of milk which she wouldn't swallow was al I could do since I was meeting the crew for a sampling trip on the suwannee. did chores, packed lunch. woke roosters up. pup cold. guardian running in circles.
08:50, 28F, north wind, 10-15 knts. all day. ice on the banks of the suwannee river. ice on the deck of the boat. hands freezing. water temperature, 14C, 59F. water felt warm compared to the air which did not get above 39 most of the day. trawled and did boat sets with bait seine. 10 sets. catches were low, mostly small amounts of pinfish and silver jennys (Eucinostomus sp) no larger than 2", a few juvenile blue crabs, and a juvenile large mouth bass. we had to abort several trawls due to snags which meant we dumped the catch without measuring them and set the trawl again. both aborts brought in some big fat white catfish, which were wrestled out of the trawl sleeve and thrown back. birds were scarce - 1 small flock of brown pelicans, another small flock of white pelicans, and a lot of cormorants flying and rafting. a loon in the river. a few ducks in side creeks. 2 wet, muddy, and cold-looking raccoons puttering around the river banks. water was low. everything else was hunkered down.
14:00, 40F at back door. checked in barn and lamb was dead. buried her. hay to all. chicken soup for supper. built fire.
17:20, 35F, chores done. 2 loads of wood under porch roof. getting tired..
waxing half moon up above.
