sampled fish populations between preacher's hole and # 4 channel. strong outgoing tide. pulled 4 sets with the 600 ft. seine. some hard pulls with strong currents and heavy catches. stingrays coming into the estuary to have their pups. measured 4 different species of a lot of rays. captured big black drum, YOY sharks, trout, a shad, jacks, menhaden, and whiting - all identified, measured, counted, and tossed back. bait net brought in young-of-the-year (YOY) permit, spadefish, and cobia (a rarity up here in the north.) water temps, 28-29C, 82-84F, and dark as coffee from the waters rushing out of the suwannee. a light chop. set bait seine on derrick key which is washing away, but still has black mangroves and several sandbars where birds rest - brown pelicans, royal terns, gull terns, dowitchers, and willets. YOY permit, a snapper, anchovies in the seine.

sampling the fishes in the back creeks of the suwannee river delta. caught the usual suspects - a lot of anchovies and scaled sardines (Harengula jaguana) in the bait seine and a few spot, pinfish and leather jackets. did 2 sets with the 600 ft. seine which caught young mullet, sting rays, several sheepshead, and a good sampling of young redfish, those beautiful bronze fish with the spots on their tails. water was very dark from tannin. water temperature in the mid-80's, still refreshing. saw no alligators today and few birds other than ospreys and a night heron. a noisy marsh hen cackled at us from the sawgrass by hog island. we have a new hire who seems uncomfortable in the dark water and the dense sawgrass covered banks we were working from today. the breezes were wonderful and the skyscapes were magnificent with towering cumulus. a fantastic day on the water!

07:30, 74F, blue skies, sunny. roosters crowing. crows cawing. walked pup and old russell. sheep out in the pasture. doing a wash.
09:30, 78F, clouds trucking from SE. crop duster plane working over the corn and peanut field to the NE. probably trying to head off the mold from all this rain. farmers have a hard lot sometimes but don't feel real bad for this one farmer who irrigated 24/7 to get his corn up. that puts a big dent in the water table during dry times.
15:20, 92F, clouding up but still sunny. wash almost dry. opened west windows in kitchen, scrubbed floor.
18:30, 88F, mostly cloudy. got more hay from hay guy who was baling hay into round rolls, "for cows." asked if he ever looked at the radar. "it scares me," he answered, "so I don't look.." told him there was still rain in the gulf since he mentioned cutting more hay. he laughed..

fed cat. trawls got good rinse yesterday. were dry by noon. packed trawls. trawls good to go except one needs the cod end sleeve checked for rips from catfish and stingray spines.

05:30, 72F, drizzling. got 4.3" of rain yesterday. took advantage of lull in rain to do chores accompanied by pup. hay to sheep and donkeys, fed chickens. got 1 egg. guardian out and barking all over the farm. dixie mute under the house. flood watch for levy county. suwannee overflowing her banks...

05:40, 74F, overcast, slight drizzle. mild breeze from SW. let guardian out. dixie barking from under house. walked pup and old russell. roosters crowing. got 2.0" rain last night. supposed to go out on the water but might not - small craft warmings posted. more storms offshore.
08:00. water water everywhere. storms and water spouts, so there .. south winds, 15-20 knts with gusts to at least 30. water so high that grassy key, a small dune surrounded by spartina that usually sticks out between atsena otie and snake key, was invisible. pulled 3 sets with the 600 ft. seine. the last set, which was supposed to be on grassy key but which was moved to atsena otie netted us 80 stingrays, 3 different species, and some big gulf flounder. then the storms converged and a water spout emerged. we made a run for the marina and just barely made it under the bridge, where we attempted to remain in confused seas with 30+ knts. of wind from the SW, and lightning. managed to stay under the bridge although we got knocked about. when storms passed, we zoomed back to atsena otie, the original CK until the big hurricane of 1896 which destroyed the settlement there, measured and counted our catch, still in the net well, and retrieved our net which had been tossed into the mangroves. skies were black to the north and west so we decided to call it a day. an adventure to tell my grandkids, if I ever have any ...
