fed cat. bagged bait seine and stowed it. refinishing measuring boards for the larger fish we catch - sanding, varnishing. the measuring boards with their inset meter sticks take a beating on the boat. aside from the salt, sand, sun and fish slime, they are stepped on, shoved around, and disrespected. I periodically varnish them to give them some protection and to keep the meter sticks readable.

fed cat. finished mending bag in 600 ft. seine. 300 more ft. to go. continued working on trawl. bottom in bad shape - more mend than original trawl. but it still fishes and catches fish. rescued banded pigeon, a visitor, from lab cat. sometimes we get them, blown off course, no sun to guide them, hungry and thirsty. we feed them and provide water. a little rest and they get sent on their way. this pigeon had to rest in the bird crate that we use for bird rescues. it was safe in the crate. interesting, even though the lab cat had polished off a smoked chicken leg earlier, the pigeon brought out the predator, instantly..

sampled the fishes from #4 channel out to snake key. did 4 sets with the 600 ft. seine. overall, we pulled in, measured, identified, and threw back -redfish, trout, black drum, sheepshead, whiting, flounder, pinfish, spot, 30 cownose rays, 29 atlantic stingrays, 9 bluntnose rays, mullet, and 53 catfish. the last set was a bear, snagged on an oyster bar, bogged in mud. a back-breaker.
nice day, though. sunny, with a breeze. ducks out. also oyster catchers, willets, cormorants, dunlins, ospreys, eagles, laughing gulls and brown and white pelicans. wind switched to west early noon. tide rushing in.

11:30, 68F, sunny and breezy. quick trip to cow town to visit feed store anniversary celebration and pick up some specials. bought 4 bags of sweet feed and saved $10! and they had decent looking hay! buy 4 bales, get 1 free. must be good!
13:10 unload feed. getting warmer, had to shed sweater. sheep perked up to smell the new hay. hung out a wash.
18:30, 67F, partly cloudy. got 3 eggs. donkeys and sheep like the new hay. too bad I can't afford a lot of it. wash dry.

11:00, another wild turkey hen along 345. fences stymie turkeys. they'll go back and forth several times until they just explode into flight and end up over the fence and far off. maybe these are young-of-the-year.
high tide at CK. bunch of ducks to east. cormorants on flooding oyster bar. 66F, NW wind, 8 knts. sunny.
fed cat. worked on last trawl - sleeve needed a lot of mending from a large catch of stingrays. sunny and pleasant with a north breeze in boatyard. mockingbird on fence.
16:10, still high tide at #4 bridge. 65F, north winds, 12-15 knts. choppy. ducks here and there. great blues fishing in spartina. mature bald eagle over the scrub. a pair has a nest in a pine out in the scrub. counted 4 road-kill deer between CK and farm. strange. vultures galore.
18:30, 60F at back door. overcast, damp, with chilly north breeze. got 1 egg. collected firewood. the myriad bright greens from all the newly leafed-out oaks is stunning.

08:00, high tide getting ready to ebb at CK. 62F, SE wind, 12 knts. ducks in the shallows. egrets in the marsh. white pelicans circling #4 bridge.
choppy on the water. lots of birds. catches are slowly increasing. since it was my birthday request, we did the area where we only had 2 sets with the big seine, rather than the area to the south where we had 4 sets with the 600 ft. seine. the rest of the sets were with the bait seine. worked for me!!
oystercatchers, laughing gulls, plus other gulls, and willets perched on oyster bars. one sand bar full of dowitchers. another crammed with white pelicans. big flock of ducks flying up from the clam leases west of CK. water temps, mid 60's. caught a lot of stingrays even in the bait seine. the cownose rays are back in the estuary. atlantic stingrays continue breeding and the "wings" of the females, and even some males, are all chewed up. caught one large redfish and one juvenile black drum that was hefty but still had it's baby stripes. otherwise, baitfish, baitfish, baitfish..
overcast all day. saw 5 eagles - 3 juveniles, 2 adults. one of the juveniles was sitting in the marsh when another came screeching down on it, talons outstretched. the first flew off chased by the second. big mature eagle on a dead pine. another standing on a sandspit looking seaward.. the last juvenile flying over goose cove.
14:30, west wind, 6 knts. 72F. falling high tide at #4 bridge. ducks in channel. several great blue herons fishing on marsh's edge. fed lab cat before I left.
15:40, 75F, overcast. radar says it's sprinkling here but just a mist over the pasture. got 1 egg. put sheep's hay in barn.
21:00, 66F, drizzling. one good shower earlier. no stars at all. really dark out. dixie and guardian sitting out in drizzle. if it's storming, they'll go into a barn but otherwise not. must be their thick, layered winter coats that make them oblivious to the rain. pup with her short bull-dog coat prefers to be inside when it rains - although she enjoys swimming. so everyone is where they want to be tonight. I hope.

08:00, 2 wild turkeys wandering along 345. high tide falling at CK. big flock of ducks to east. 64F, south wind, 8 knts. a light chop. partly cloudy, partly sunny. catches were low generally. 4 sets with big seine netted a bunch of stingrays, both atlantic and cownose, silver perch, and batfish. mullet were scarce. got some trout in one set and a large redfish. several mackeral, too, so fish are coming back into the estuary to feed on the young baitfish - pinfish, mullet, spot. low catches with the bait seine. wind picked up and switched to the west in the early afternoon. water temperature, 18C, 65F. turbid. white pelicans resting on shell bars behind scale key. ducks mostly in backwaters. neap tide today so low was not real low. pelicans and cormorants out by corrigan's reef area - scale key, cedar point, dog island - where most of our sampling took place. got the first diamond-back terrepin of the year at dog. as with most of our catches, he was identified, measured, and thrown back.
