Chantal measurements (a bust) and general jocularities

By: hurricanecrab , 8:41 PM GMT on July 10, 2013

This blog is for the purpose of recording measurements of TS Chantal as it passes by my location (Cayman Islands).

Current measurements:

Wind: 12 mph from the NE; occasional gusts of 18mph from the NE
BP: 1101 mb
Personal BP: 125/90

NEW! Cayman Islands radar. woo hoooo!

Link to .Cayman Islands Weather Service
As is always the case when ANY storm is in our area, I'll be staying up all night on the internet.

Disclaimer: I hold myself responsible for my posts, however should I get a tad punchy in the wee hours, I hope you all will take that into consideration.

We're not closing the shutters. Shutter hardware is inside the house, just in case. It seems likely that power will go out, and if so, I doubt we'll know it, as we create 75% of our own power. Not taking down the wind genny; the company that makes it claims it is 'rated' to 70 mph. We'll see. We have another stored away just in case.

I fully anticipate a cat rodeo later on. Silly buggers always cry to go outside when it's storming, and sometimes they are able to hide outside if we don't get them inside in time. Oh yeah, I'm lookin' forward to this -- crawling on my elbows and knees under the shed to drag a pissed off cat out in the rain and carry them into the house. There is obviously something fundamentally wrong with me.

Hack, cough! You know, Crab, you really need to put up a clean entry. This one is getting really dusty. Smells musty and I detect a hint of a fishly ghost of dinners past somewhere in here. Phew.

How'd the decorating go? No unfortunate harness failures, I hope.

Happy Thanksgiving!

What's Turkey Day like on Da Brac? Do you stuff a lion fish, perhaps? lol

However you celebrate, I hope you and The Bride have a good day.

Sandi, nope, we didn't drink any of the cherry wine -- no lowbrow brewers we, we have to properly age it for at least six months.......... if we can ;D I was thrilled to see that three of the five cherry trees are already blossoming again and already the carpenter bees are buzzing around to pollinate. weeeeeeeeeee!

{{Finn}} Nice to see you too! It's hot and very, very wet here, but at least not supertemperatures as in the States; we have rain twice a day lately, and since I do a lot of work in de bush, I have come to think of myself as Wrinkleman. Don't ask. :D

Shore! Thank you SO much for the history of the Teignmouth Electron! It was here when we moved here 18 years ago. I've walked upon it and pondered it, but never knew the history. It was a rotten hulk even 18 years ago, but at that time, was still possible to rework it. Not any more. I just drove past it's final resting place this morning. Two of the hurricanes (Mitch and Ivan, I belive) really tore it apart. All that remains now is two of the pontoons. Somewhere along the line, somebody spray-painted "dream boat" on one of the pontoons.

It was a mighty and powerful sea warrior at one time, I believe. When I walked upon it 18 years ago, I thought to myself that if a person wanted to sink USD $10,000 into it, it could take on all seas. Sadly, nobody stepped up to the plate.

I noticed that it still has a screw and prop, thus it must've had an engine. Sad but intriguing story connected to the boat. It will not rise again.

SNOW! I want a heatgloo! I started building a sweat lodge two years ago, which I didn't finish............ surely that qualifies?? All I have to do to finish it is peel about 40 more square feet of sea grape bark off fallen trees and attach that to the lodge. I sweat plenty, all the time, but there are times when a body feels the need to commune with the elements, ya know?

Funny, sorta related story........... I sweat a LOT. I usually wear t-shirts, and I often go through more than four of them in a day. Today, I was doing errands and paying bills and such and wore a cotton button-down shirt. Do you know that four -count 'em FOUR -- people pointed out to me that the back of my shirt was wet? How is a person supposed to answer such an observation?? I was tempted to tear my shirt off, throw it to the ground, stomp on it and scream "BAD SHIRT!!!" hahaaaaaaaaa Like I don't KNOW my shirt is wet. Like it's a CRIME to be wearing it. People. (roll eyes)

Crab, I stumbled into your neighborhood tonight, thanks to ycd. He came over to wordpress to comment on my post there about Tristan Jones, and left a link about Donald Crowhurst. His boat, Teignmouth Electron, ended up in Jamaica, got sold and resold and finally landed at Cayman Brac. Have you ever seen the boat? Apparently some artist bought it - it went to Jamaica in 2007, so all of this is fairly recent. Just one of those funny connections that pops up. It would be too cool if you've seen the boat.

Hi Crab - did you drink some of the cherry wine whilst watching and waiting that sneaky storm? Gamma said she had come back for another bite, but I can't see it on the WU site.

Have a great weekend, if you can:)

I'd love a copy of that, Rocket.

Well, all indications are that Chantal is a washout. Scroot....... I'm still staying up on the 'net all night, because I hate a sneaky storm.

Last time I did this was 08 NOV 2008, when Hurricane Paloma kicked our butts. I woke up several people at 2:00 a.m. when the storm turned and strengthened. They were all pissed off. "What d'you expect me to do??"

"Well, I don't know about you, but I always want to fight a storm with my pants and shoes on." :D

So it goes. I'm not disappointed. Glad that I don't have to close the shutters. Glad that I don't have to belay tomorrow's plans. Glad that we're not going to get our butts kicked again.

Still staying up. I hate a sneaky storm.

You remember that, huh, Rocket? LMBO! 'twas 2005, if I recall. Well, it would be fitting. We already have a sizeable lake behind our house. Maybe I should stock it with something hard to eradicate, like lionfish. They are quite tasty, in spite of their venomous spines.

Good to see you matey.
