Hurricane Preparedness Links

By: collinsfarm , 1:24 PM GMT on May 17, 2006

The official start of the 2006 Hurricane Season is only days away. Experts predict another busy season. To borrow the motto of the Boy Scouts, I urge everyone to "Be Prepared". Following is a brief checklist for those that do not have preparedness plans already in place.

Evacuation Plan
1. Know ahead of time where you can go if you are told to
evacuate. Pick several places; a friend's home, a motel
or an offical shelter.
2. Make a list of these places with phone numbers and be
sure to have a map with several routes on how to get
there. Secondary roads may be the best route to take.
3. Keep in mind that evacuating does not necessarily mean
traveling hundreds of miles.
4. Listen to official NOAA weather radio or local broadcasts
for evacuation instructions. If told to leave, do so at
once.

Disaster Supplies Kit
Assemble a supplies kit that can sustain you and your family for a minimum of three days. Seven days is better.
The basics of the kit should contain the following items:
1. First aid kit and essential prescription medications.
2. Non-perishable food, canned food, manual can opener.
3. At least one gallon of water per person per day for
drinking. More is required for cooking and sanitary.
4. Extra set of sturdy clothing, shoes, raingear.
5. Bedding (especially if you have to go to a shelter).
6. Flashlight for each member of the family with extra
batteries, radio.
7. Identification, insurance papers, family photos (know
where these are and be prepared to grab quickly and place
in a waterproof holder).
8. Cash in small bills and change.

Home Preparations
1. Assemble materials required to shutter your home. If
using plywood, pre-cut and number the pieces and practice
installing them in fair weather. Keep all necessary
hardware in one place along with any drill bits or tools
required for installation.
2. Identify objects outside that will need to be moved and
or secured prior to a storm and know how you will do so.
3. Make repairs to exterior of home.
4. Know where the water, gas and electrical main service
valves and switches are located and how to shut them off
if directed to do so.

Hurricane Watch Issued
A Hurricane Watch means that hurricane conditions are
POSSIBLE in the specified area, usually within 36 hours. If
a watch is issued, begin the following:
1. Install storm shutters.
2. Remove or secure yard objects.
3. Fill your car's gas tank.
4. Check supplies kit and store additional water.
5. Make contact without person(s) outside of watch area
and inform them of your possible evacuation.
6. Protect family/heritage items and photos.
7. Assemble important papers.

Hurricane Warning
A Hurricane Warning means that hurricane conditions are
EXPECTED in the specified area, usually within 24 hours.
1. Listen to local officials and evacuate if ordered.
2. If evacuating, shut off services to home, notify person
outside of area that you are leaving and verify where
you are going.
3. If you are not told to evacuate, rush to complete home
preparations, store additional water.
4. Do not go outside during the storm. Listen to official
reports and instructions from local officials. Return
home only when it is declared safe to do so.

For much more information, please visit the links in the "MY Links" section of this blog. For Florida residents, we will have a "tax holiday" from May 21st till June 1st to purchase supplies tax free. Some retailers such as Tractor Supply are offering additional savings on preparedness items. Check your supplies now and take advantage of these savings to augment your kit and plan.

The lists above are in no way complete but offer the basics in forming and carrying out a plan. Additionally, the timing of a Watch and Warning is subject to the individual storm. Pay careful attention to all broadcasts and instructions and BE PREPARED to act at once. I wish everyone a safe season.

G'morning Collins, good to see you this AM.

The BOC is the worst place for a storm to develope for us. Right now I'm not too concerned as there have been sooooooo many flare ups and die downs.

I'll say this though, the conditions are right down there.

Hope you have a blessed day!

And for those of you who have just purchased generators for this year. DO NOT run them in the open rain, or have them close to your house! Carbon monoxide poisoning and electrocution is deadly!

Good morning collins,
One more reminder on the first day of the season. For those of you with generators, today would be a good day to haul it out, and crank it up! You don't want to wait until the wind is blowing to find out you have a problem!

Just wanted to thank you for this blog. Hopefully it has helped many prepare. Off today to finish my purchases of tax free durables.
Have an idea for R&D, how 'bout some double sided WUBA tape? Need the sticky on both sides!
Thanks again.

Just wanted to make a teensy point that having a good plan means having it written down.

It's also sometimes useful to put yourself in the mindset of having just survived a bad storm, and imagine power out, services disrupted, you're on your own. WHAT do you wish you would've packed?

Ok, I am doing good. after I posted what I got earlier this week; yesterday went out and got a lot, and I mean PLENTY of all sizes of batteries (tax free) and a few other items that I need to replenish. and some of those battery circle light you attache on walls in bathrooms, hallways, etc...

today I went and got a lot of water to store away...got 10 of the Gal jugs, 48 large bottles, and 40 small bottles. I know I will need to get more water but can only deal with a little at a time.

So I am on my way...also still have most of the stuff from last year if I didnot need to use it or did not give it away to some one who did need it.

Hi gamma,
Thanks for stopping by. The propane camp stoves are great. Dependable and esy to use. Just be sure to use it outdoors. Cooking with it inside could lead to a build up of carbon dioxide.

I need to get some more of those propain tubs for my Coleman's camping stove. That was one thing I didn't have last year that I wish I had because it will heat liquids so much faster than a big grill. So got one last winter....but still in box. need to open it and check it out and get more fuel for it.

Good morning collins!!

Still waiting on those pictures with Crab!!

Slowly but surely we are using the Tax Break.

Hubby bought two more big gas containers last Monday. I got a few things yesterday and still need to freshen up my battery supply later this weekend.

You know I got two battery operated fans yesterday (they were on sale) but they were not tax exempted!! When on earth would you use a battery operated 10' fan except in an emergency!!!!

... Hurricane preparedness week...

The week of may 21-27 is National hurricane preparedness week. The hurricane season begins on June 1 and ends on November 30. One of the goals of hurricane preparedness week is to provide information on hurricane hazards which you can use to take action that may save
your life. Each day of hurricane preparedness week will feature a unique topic relevant to hurricane education and preparedness:

Sunday... ... ... .hurricane history
Monday... ... ... .storm surge
Tuesday... ... ... High winds
Wednesday... ... .inland flooding
Thursday... ... ..hurricane forecast process
Friday... ... ... .hurricane preparation
Saturday... ... ..taking action!

The official Atlantic hurricane season outlook will be announced at the National Hurricane Center in Miami on Monday... may 22 at 1100 am
EDT.

For more information... please visit the Florida Keys National Weather Service web site at: www.Weather.Gov/keywest.

PUBLIC SERVICE NOTICE: IF ANYONE NORMALLY USES PLYWOOD FOR HURRICANE SHUTTERS, SEND ME AN EMAIL. I'VE MADE A SYSTEM THAT IS AN IMPROVEMENT UPON THAT AND MAKES IT SUCH THAT YOU CAN CLOSE UP YOUR HOUSE IN HALF THE TIME OR LESS THAN NAILING OR SCREWING UP PLYWOOD.
