Major Ice Storm Hits Mid Michigan

By: chatcat , 4:03 PM GMT on December 22, 2013

This was the scene this morning as we looked outdoors. You can see my birch tree at the end of the deck which is totally bent over the rail but at least it isn't broken. We do have many limbs broken off and the yard is a mess. Our power went out last night around 11 PM after several brownouts. I'm afraid that we won't get it back by Christmas and that would certainly put a damper on our holiday festivities. We received almost an inch of rain overnight and temps were at the freezing mark leaving over 1/4 of an inch of inch on power lines and trees. Once again our generator is working overtime but we are thankful that we have it. Calling the power company is a lost cause but I'm sure they know the situation. Authorities are warning people to stay off secondary roads which are plagued by fallen branches and power lines. My daughter went to a funeral in Flint yesterday and came to our house for the night because road conditions were already getting bad by the time she was to drive back home to the Detroit area. But at least our generator will run the furnace, TVs, and some electrical outlets. Our biggest problem is that we don't have hot water.
Right now (10:45 AM EST), our temp is 32.2F, the humidity is 98% and skies are overcast. We only have about an inch of snow left on the ground and visibility is only 1.5 miles and we received 0.98"of rain over the past 24 hrs. The pressure is 29.66" and steady. Winds are from the NE but calm at present.

Today...Cloudy. Patchy drizzle and light freezing drizzle. Highs 31 to 35. Temperatures steady or slowly falling during the afternoon. North winds 5 to 15 mph.
Tonight...Cloudy with numerous light snow showers. Accumulations up to a half inch. Lows 17 to 21. North winds 5 to 15 mph. Chance of snow 60 percent.
Monday...Mostly cloudy until 10 am...Then partly cloudy until 4 pm...Then mostly cloudy. A chance of light snow showers until 9 am. A chance of light snow after 3 pm until 5 pm...Then light snow likely. Accumulations up to a half inch. Highs 20 to 24. North winds 5 to 15 mph. Chance of snow 60 percent.
Monday Night...Mostly cloudy until around midnight...Then partly cloudy. Light snow likely. Accumulations up to an inch. Lows 4 to 8. North winds 5 to 15 mph. Chance of snow 60 percent.
Tuesday...Mostly sunny. Highs 13 to 17. Northwest winds 5 to 15 mph...Becoming light west in the afternoon.
Tuesday Night...Partly cloudy. Lows 2 below to 4 above zero.

Stay warm ..

in the same situation here in central Illinois .. about a 1/4 to 1/3 inch of ice covering everything ..

only our power hasn't gone out yet .. wind suppose to pick up later .. has me worried we will lose it .. and no generator .. but with a wood stove we will stay warm ..
