September wrap-up

By: bigtrucker, 7:17 AM GMT on September 16, 2007

The month of September has proved to be warmer and dryer than average. The high temperature for the month occurred on September 7th,8th and 9th at 83 degrees. The mean temperature was 76 degrees,8 degrees above the normal of 68 degrees. The low temperature was 47 degrees which occurred on September,16th.
The rainfall for the month was 1.83 inches,1.57 inches falling on September,11th. This is well below the average rainfall of 3.58 inches. Also we ended up 4.75 inches below
normal for the past 2 months.
Heading into October, we are looking at the first week to be dominated by a ridge of high pressure, setting the stage for another dry, warm week with high temps in the mid to upper 70's and lows in the low to mid 50's.
Another cold front moved through this evening, bringing with it between a 1/4 to 1/2 inch of rain. If the timing was a little better, we could have tapped into the tropical moisture moving off-shore to the north but it did not pan out. September is usually the wettest month but we are 4.50 inches short since August, 1st which is a rather large rain deficet. Now we are in for another week of beautiful, Fall like weather, with no rain in the forecast.
Will be watching Karen as that could take aim from the Outer Banks, northward, for now just something to watch, as it has a long way to go. One thing to note is that tropical cyclones originated from the Cape Verde area, and take a track inbetween the Bahama's and Bermuda can sometimes be trouble for Southern New England. Hurricane Gloria and LI express were 2 such Hurricanes
High pressure has had a firm grip here in Southern New England and will throughout the end of next week. We have had only 1 day with measurable precip out of the past 30 days. We are entering into light drought conditions,a portion of N.E. Conecticut(the sleepy corner) is entering into moderate drought conditions. There is a chance for some sowers in the long range forecast, by next Thursday we'll see how that pans out.
