coyote pups yipping

By: bawlf , 2:15 PM GMT on March 16, 2014

1.7 C (35.06 F) at 07:53 hrs, sunrise 07:47 AM and sunset 7:41 PM.

Daytime: A mix of clouds and sun during the morning will give way to cloudy skies this afternoon. High 7C. Winds WSW at 10 to 15 kmh.

Nighttime: Some clouds. Low -3C. Winds W at 10 to 15 kmh.

I never thought I would actually have any problems living close to wildlife. Now I do. Presently it is coyote birthing time, at least for the last six weeks or so. If you remember, on a previous post of mine, during my last coyote sighting I saw two of them. One larger than the other. And I saw them heading into the northwest bluff behind the containment pond which is behind our home.

The two coyotes, male and female, set up a den in the bluff and now have a number of pups. For some reason they commence to yipping and howling between 1:30 AM and 3:00 AM on the odd night. I have trouble sleeping at the best of times making it doubly difficult when there is a howl party going on in the back of the house.

Thanks for sharing that whitewabit. I didn't know that that would be the reason. Yes, they are close, about 175 to 200 yards. They are quite used to human activity in this acreage subdivision. It is estimated that there are about 600 coyotes in the greater Edmonton, Alberta, Canada area.

They are yelping due to the adults just arrived after hunting and will regurgitate food for the pups !! a way of welcoming them ..
