Christmas Day Surf

By: barryweather, 5:26 PM GMT on December 21, 2009

Welcome to the first day of winter. I hope you haven't been too naughty, because Santa is scheduled to bring some swell with offshore conditions on Christmas Day. The tide will be low in the morning, so I'm not sure how the inside sandbars will be. The outsides could be firing though, because the predicted wave heights are in the 5 - 8 foot range on Christmas eve. Water temperatures are currently 60 or below near shore. In fact, the Gulf Shores bouy 20 miles out is ...

December Surf

By: barryweather, 3:58 PM GMT on December 11, 2009

I've seen some pictures from December that look pretty good. Check out Nik McCue's December pics here Side Stream Sports Here is a video from another spot on Wednesday the 9th Surf Smooth (I know, I know it's not in Florida)The sidestream sports pics above show that Pensacola pier was definately the spot though. I was there with my son Reed so I didn't get to surf, but I did get a little surf the day before. However, I was able to snap a decent picture with my phone...

First December Swell

By: barryweather, 8:53 PM GMT on December 01, 2009

Yesterday some lucky surfers caught a fun longboard swell here in Pensacola. Now we have a system coming out of the western gulf that may produce 15 foot waves close to shore. The waves aren't hitting the beach yet, and Wednesday will bring gale force winds making waves dangerous and hard to catch (if not impossible). It is possible that the fetch will create some fun 8 second leftovers for Thursday morning with offshore winds. It will die quickly as usual, but ther...

Tropical Storm Ida? 8-9 foot seas to start November

By: barryweather, 9:04 PM GMT on November 04, 2009

October helped to replenish many surf starved Panhandle Floridians and November is shaping up nicely. Apparently, we may see Tropical Storm Ida before the day is up. Before her swells begin to reach our shores, if they ever do, we are predicted to have building surf this weekend up to 9 foot on Monday (Gulf Coast Scale heh heh!). Unfortunately the winds will most likely be sideshore/onshore and heavy at times with SCA to possible GF winds. Right now side shore c...

The flatest summer I've suffered through in a while.

By: barryweather, 6:44 PM GMT on July 14, 2009

There hasn't been much surf to speak of this summer. We have had a few small swells though. Then Claudette appeared almost out of nothing. I missed the best surf which occured the night that Claudette made landfall and the next morning. In fact, that morning there were even some head high barrels to be had with plenty of close outs. I was able to catch some waist to chest high slop at low tide. Needless to say, I was a bit disappointed. I did get a few good drops in...
