Notice Anything Different?

By: Toby Skinner , 2:04 AM GMT on February 02, 2011

You found your way to this blog so you've already seen the new design of wunderground.com and we hope that you like what you've seen so far.

This is the culmination of 2 years of development and planning with the goal to improve the user interface and make it even easier for our users to quickly surface the weather data that they are looking for.

In fact, you could argue that this is the culmination of 16 years hard work. As you know, we constantly launch new products and tools to enhance the service we provide to you all. Over the years we've added so much data to the back-end that we needed to reorganize the Site Architecture - a spring clean as it were.

This has helped us group all of our content into 7 main channels which in turn has led to the easier to use navigation of the new site. The simple new layout design presents the data in a more digestible format and appears less data heavy.

Rest assured, we have not taken away any of the data from the old site. To the contrary, it is now easier to quickly view a lot more weather data than before - especially on the city forecast pages where you now get an overview of the hourly forecasts without having to click to a new page.

There are too many new benefits to list them all - the load time is a lot faster than the previous version, we have new graphics such as spark lines that enable you to quickly view weather patterns and you can customize your city forecast page using the collapsable modules.

If you want to learn more please take a look at this presentation that we put together which showcases some of the more significant changes.

Please let us know what you think of the new design - it's all for your benefit so we hope you like it!

If you have any issues with the new site please submit a support ticket.

I love it! I'm having an issue w/ rapid fire updates. It's static.

I too feel the new site is terrible. In fact, I am a usability professional and I find the new site f very unusable compared with the old site. I find it harder to see what I want with the new site and some things, like the different radar views, I cannot find at all (OK, I admit I gave up after minute or two of looking). Please allow us to continue to use the old format, even if you do permanently implement the new one.

This sucks. All I want is to click my bookmark, then hit the hourly link.
It was all perfect before.
Now it sucks.
Guess I'll go back to shitty accuweather.com

I have to say, I'm not real happy with the new layout. First saw it on my android device, and thought I was in the wrong place. Couldn't find anything.

Went to my PC with 1920x1200 monitor. Still have to scroll down to find what was *right there* in the classic layout. Also, the classic layout took up the entire screen, this new one gives me 3" of unused white space on each side, which is probably why I now have to scroll down to find the actual forecast.

When I find the forecast, the 5 day doesn't have percent chance of precipitation, unlike the classic view.

At least I can find the classic site now, so I can get a usable experience.

Hi Wunderground staff,

I am a long-time user, first time registration.

CONS: The new layout is fine; I rather like the streamlined look. However, the reason I use Wunderground in the first place is because it has current conditions, radar, and a five-day forecast all "above the fold" and is easy to scan visually without spending time tracking down information. Many people are complaining about having to click through to find info, but it seems to be the opposite: the classic version allows you to click through if you want more detailed information so it doesn't clutter up the main weather page, while this new version looks like it drank too much weather last night and is now spewing it all over the page. Nothing stands out or jumps out; it is impossible to scan the monotone page. Even the now-mostly-white icons for the three-day forecast get lost in the sheer boredom of the page.
By the way, stylistically speaking, bold horizontal dividers (like the ones now used for Nearby and Community) discourage scrolling. There is just too much white space. Nothing draws the eye and the basic information is spread too far apart. I also miss the WunderPhotos section, although granted I only used it casually. The old icons had no problems either, so I'm not really sure why they needed to be made so low-tech.

PROS: I love that the header is all cleaned up. It was much too busy, and nothing really drew my eye up there, so I mostly ignored everything. The tabbed sections stand out much more clearly without the all the text surrounding it.

I think that perhaps the designers got a bit carried away with minimizing everything. I *do* think that the classic site needed to be cleaned up, but throwing all the information onto a single page is really doing the opposite. If you have no plans to readjust the new site, please leave the classic one available.

Thank you!

AMEN!

I was extremely shocked this morning to find a new look to the website and I'm still unsure if I like it. Immediately, I switched back to the Classic version, but after a couple more visits, I've decided to give the new site a chance. When it comes to a site so full of helpful information, change scares the hell out of me. I'll do my best to try to get used to it.

As for all of the others that are disappointed in the new design and switched back to the "Classic" - Be aware that Weather Underground did this to help increase load times and reduce server loads, so it's possible that switching may be gone some day in the near future. (I could be wrong, though and I hope I am.)

This place amazes me....
Or the brown nosers do. Why not say you don't like the site in your own handle? Are you afraid ADMIN will dislike you?? Many here must use admin to crap on others,Then when admin does something they dont like they create troll handles to complain..Living proof this site plays favorites why else would someone troll admin other than to save their real screen name from retaliation???....Hey Admin quit playing favorites and the trolls YOU create will go away and you can design as you please....

I like the layout

I woke up after an overnight snow storm in Chicago, boot the computer - and saw the new page.

My first thought was: How could the snow cause that?

I like the New look! It is clean and uncluttered. I have not had the chance to use it and play with it much(to busy shoveling. I am sure there will be a learning curve to really like it, but nice lay out. I am impressed.

I absolutely do not like the new layout. In the old layout, I had today's weather in the upper left and five days out to the right. In one glance I knew how the rest of the week was shaping up.

Ditto! One glance gave me current & 5 days, and just below that but still on my screen was the text version of the forecast (often more useful than the pictures, esp. when snow or rain are involved).

I wanted to post a screenshot of what I, a subscriber, see. Clean and to the point. I really like it and I find that I can locate information much quicker than with the older view.

I hate the changes, folks. The old layout was faster and easier to use with better graphics and it was so much easier to navigate. Please, please, please go back to the old layout!!

Frustrated with the new site, not a good thing to be on a great weather day like today here in Maine. If you are going to leave it like this at least get wunderphotos back up near the top!!! Please!

I am making myself late this morning just to make a handle for this site (how on earth are all MY handles taken already) so I could say this:

Change is hard. I was so sad when I saw the site this morning and actually retyped the address because I assumed I was on the very seldom used weatherdotcome since i actually had gone there last night just to compare.

It is always shocking, however, when something we love changes dramatically, even if it is good. So, if I still say I hate you in 3 days, you will really know I suppose.

I do agree with a previous poster, however, in that now you look like all the other websites : (

I too, have been a long time paying member. Change is inevitable in all things. Think birthdays! The only new part I really dislike, is the gray text. I've gone back and forth between classic and the new all morning. Rather than complain, check it out folks. I have read back a bit here, and got a chuckle from those saying they will let subscriptions expire if you don't go back. Do they really think our little $5 (if you are long term) or $10 subscriptions, pays for all we get? Shame on them! Keep on keeping on WU. You've long been the Hotel California of weather sites, and will continue to be. Those who leave, never really checked in to begin with. Others are in line to do so.

People hate change! :)

I did not like it at first but then I noticed how much faster it loads, even on a netbook, and how everything I need is still accessible, just in a different spot.

I like it, a lot, and won't be switching back to classic.

The new design is awful
Too many clicks to get to where it only took a minute on the old platform.
Lost my favorites.
The new site is way too complicated to figure out today's hour by hour weather which was the most useful feature...
Go BACK!

I couldn't agree more. In fact, if they keep this format, I will NOT renew my membership when it comes due. With the old site I had all my information for the week right at my fingertips and my saved local cities weather immediately available. I can't even figure out this new piece of junk. Worst this this site has ever done.

I just registered for the first time to give feedback. I have used Weather Underground every day for many years for fast, accurate and easy to use navigation. Now, it seems that the weather station locations are not specific to the zip code or even town submitted. the 5 day forecast is hard to see. I don't find the detailed information easily.
I feel uncomfortable complaining about a free service, but if this doesn't change back to some resemblance of the old format, at least at the top of the page, I will have to look elsewhere. This is a shame. I didn't realize how much I depended on this site for my travels in the Colorado mountains. Now, with no accuracy, I have no confidence. Sorry!

I'm assuming that all the white space on the right is for ads if you are not a member????

You must be using adblock. If not then you should see ads there.

I have also been a long time member. I also know the way of the world is to change what, for many people, already works fine.

I'm assuming that all the white space on the right is for ads if you are not a member???? It's also a very "popular" layout. No creativity involved. As someone already noted, the white space is wasted space. Why do that?

I too have always felt wunderground was different....better than accuweather, weather.com, etc. Your designers are going with the crowd rather than being creative. You created what YOU liked instead of finding out what WE wanted.

I've spent some time with the new design and overall I find it very unattractive and much less productive.

Thanks for at least including an option for the classic site. Please don't mess with this.

What happened to the map where you could click on a state and go to a list of cities in that state? My kids have used this site for years for school and I like the feature of being able to find what you need by just clicking, no typing needed for younger students.

Hmmm... I will reserve my comments on the new layout for later as change is ALWAYS frowned upon at first... I will say ONE thing for sure. Keep the favorites as a side bar. I don't want to have to slide a bar to see all of my favorites. I travel a lot and want ALL of my favorites easily viewable. Or at LEAST have the OPTION to have them all viewable as probably MOST people don't need a lot of favorites. Make it a "shrinkable" view like your other stuff so I can personalize mine to have that.
I wonder if some of these commentors took the tour of the new site...

Seems like some of the new site is not working (drop downs). Maybe you should consider a rollback until the bugs are worked out? Not so sure that the new look is better. This may be an example of fixing something that was not broke or trying to do too much too quickly? Sorry for the bad news but its important to listen to customers views if you want to keep them happy.

There is only one change I would recommend for the new site- make the link to the old site MUCH CLEARER

We get it, miniscule faint print and tons of white space has a cool corporate look if you're designing a page for a bank or something. This is almost a parody of a badly designed all-style no practicality site-

There are lots of other weather sites, the clear, easy, unpretentious layout was what put WU above the rest

Hope you heed the comments, removing the old site would be suicide!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! Excellent new format. Kudos!

The new layout is not user friendly at all. In fact it is far more difficult to navigate than the old layout. Far too many clicks to get to where you want to be. One of the most glaring omissions for me is the lack of a one click link from my favorites to the marine forecast. I make my living on the water and having this direct link to the marine forecast is one of the reasons I have been a loyal Wunderground follower since 02. Please consider going back to the way it was!

just found the the classic...i was in a panic for 10 minutes.it was like -i'm on the wrong web site help! change is always bad like the classic
Member Since: Posts: Comments:
Wow, this is absolutely NOT easier to use. Did you do any user testing to find out how people were using the old view? With the new one, I have to scroll and click a lot more to get the one view I use most -- today's hourly summary w/temp/precip, etc. WITH PICTURES. The new layout uses a lot more text and assumes that people want to read their weather.

But thanks for not removing Classic View. I will still be using it!

I have to agree with most of the comments on liking the older page better. Liked being able to see the weather for a bunch of days in a row altogether-not having to scroll looking for it. Plus it's not as detailed.

I'm not exactly sure what was wrong with the old webpage? Agree that some people might not like change but why water down a great weather page?
Member Since: Posts: Comments:
I thought this new one was a little odd at first, but I think its just that I'm used to the old one, I'm sure I'll come around to liking the change more once I get used to it!

Classic site...

Member Since: Posts: Comments:
Sorry, but the new format is far inferior to the old one, and I don't think it's a case of getting used to a new thing. I've toggled back and forth between the two, and there's no question that I get the information I want and need almost instantaneously with the old one (quick picture of current conditions, quick look at radar, quick indication of the next few days). With the new site, there's a lot of scrolling, and some clicking, just to get what I saw immediately with the old one. What I do get quickly is the current temperature and a map of the world. Is there any way to keep the old format as a personal option?

Thank you for giving us the classic option. Everything in the classic mode is so condensed, you don't need to scroll down the page to find long range forecasts, regional radar and wonder photos thumbnail. In the classic you don't have to click on each day to see the long range forecast for that day.
