Foggy Morning

By: WatchinTheSky , 4:48 PM GMT on September 12, 2010

Our string of below normal summer days days continue, very foggy this AM. One of my favorite things is early morning in the backyard back by the hummingbird feeders. The back left corner is feeding central and it is buzzing with activity. I am not sure how many birds it takes to drink 2 gallons a day but it is a big crowd!

There is a waiting line for these feeders.

Seems like every day our coast (Oceanside specifically) has set record low high temps because of the cool ocean surface temps.

I have to agree with calpoppy regarding this summer, nice change from the usual heat, wish we had received some summer rain down here though.

PSP, I think we may pay for our nice La Nina summer with a drier than normal winter - I hope not! September looks to be cool this year, October is the big worry. I have seen a report or two predicting a worse than usual Santa Ana season with hot dry east winds - potentially bad for fires. Hope not again! There was a front page article this morning concerned that Lake Mead (at Las Vegas) power generation would shut down in 3 years if the lake continues to lower at the existing rate. It is supposedly at a 50 year low.

You have me beat with all those hummers! I was counting them all on the branches of the tree plus at the feeders, 10 maybe? What are the box like things on the tripods? ( if I can be a little nosy :)). sometimes we see a woodpecker drinking from our feeders, and we still have 2 Orioles left from the season. Die hard sugar addicts!

Wow! I am very impressed with your flock of hummingbirds! We are lucky to see two birds at one time, usually just one at a time, and if there are two flying around, only one will be feeding at a time. Ours don't share too well. I think there may be 2-3 that live around our yard at a time. But they are back after some absence during the summer and have been busy at the small feeder we have. But with so few the feeder lasts quite a few days, even when they are frequently sipping.
