Sharpie's Behaving

By: WatchinTheSky , 4:48 PM GMT on April 01, 2013

April - from Latin Aprilis, possibly from aperire 'to open' alluding to buds and blossoms of northern hemisphere spring. Or maybe Roman/Etruscan Aphros or Apru. International Trombone Week is in April. Ah, sp is better at this than I.

Speaking of sp, hope the pain is fading - maybe it is related to hearing about a nincompoop elected official from Alaska!

Happy April Fool's Day!!! I've never been good at coming up with pranks, alas. Google's prank is pretty funny, a recommended diversion :)

So far, it looks like the garden is just tomatoes and basil this year?? I guess, go with what works :) Was going to get a couple Sun Golds but $2 for each or a six pack for $4 - I have lots of Sun Golds now!

Tuesday April 16 -
A fresh video capture off WUcam -

April 1

Speaking of nice mentions (Hi calpoppy!), a couple captures off of the backyard hummer/oriole WU cam -

Feeling better about the sharpie not running off the orioles, looks like 3 pairs so far hanging around and chattering up a storm.

I hope you are all having fun at the park celebrating your birthdays!

I am so glad Ylee put your cam up on his blog. It is a cool cam and it is nice to have it up where the WU'ers will all see it.

Happy Birthday! I guess it still works to say this, since it is inbetween the real day and the celebration time! The zipline ought to be pretty fun - just yesterday talked to a friend who recently was ziplining over the jungle in Mexico, something like 9 different ziplines, plus multiple repels down waterfalls, cliffs etc. for a whole day event. She loved it. I hope you have great weather for the day! Rain is on the way in this afternoon again and cool, but this week has shown a little more sunshine than usual. Must be spring!

Hi BC! Thanks :) Good thing about them wrinkles =:O
I didn't think the Park let out the video of that part of the zipline!! Must be why they say 'keep your feet up!' ;)
Be careful, you're going to make my head swell! Actually, it's cool being on Ylee's blog - he IS the master webcam accumulator. Finally saw monkeys on the SnowMonkey cam!

Thanks, GG! I need to do something about early morning sun on the cam. The image was pretty blown out.

Sorry I missed your birthday. As I get older, I find myself forgetting to look at my Important Dates list, as well as my To Do list. I hope you had a good birthday and continue to enjoy the extended celebration. I know about that, because my mother's birthday is a week before mine, so we celebrate together, too -- any time from a couple weeks before to a couple weeks after, depending on how schedules work out.

Since you're getting older now, try to remember:
There's always something to be thankful for if you take time to look for it. For example, you can be thankful that wrinkles don't hurt.

Zipline? Wild Animal Park? Don't chicken out!

Hi Karen! Those tomatoes are really big already :) And picked some, too! I've been waiting for some sun to get photos of mine, maybe tomorrow - still getting waves of drizzle passing by. Some short breaks of sun (very short).

Thanks cp!!!! We are doing a family zipline at the Park this Sunday as a group BD event. My daughter's BD is a couple of weeks before mine but this weekend is the first time all the schedules line up :) Hope the weather is a little more spring like! Make sure those pups give a little respect to the rattlers, no nips on the nose..

OK - tomato photos.

Early girl - this has quintupled in size since we bought it. Think what a potted tomato plant would look like if you bought it at Home Depot - 4" pot size.

This is a cherry tomato plant - again, really grown a lot. We added compost to both the plants.

Volunteer plant from last year (dropped tomato). We've already taken about 5 tomatoes off already.

Notice the sunshine in the photos! Started really cloudy, even with drizzles, and now it's clear and sunny! I love it when they are wrong.

Hi BC! I took off the day yesterday (another year older, what can you do??) and pondered a few possible remedies. I am working on putting up two line of sight blockers in the way of his lanes of access. It may slow him down, giving smaller birds a chance to flee! Couldn't find any good recipes anyway :)

Talk about an attention grabber! When looking down my list of Favorite Blogs and I see "Sharpie Cooking Time". And, of course, I knew who you were thinking of cooking even before the screen came up. Nasty old Sharpie!

Yes, I know hawks eat birds, but like you, I feel guilty if I lure a bird here with good eats, and then something bigger eats the one at the feeder. Maybe if you put a ScareCat (feline version of a scarecrow) on the fence, Sharpie will hang out elsewhere?

WTS - great photos! So far we only have tomatoes and lettuce in our garden. One tomato plant is a volunteer from last year but we are already getting red tomatoes off of it. The two we purchased (and planted in a mix of compost and soil) are already 3 times the size we purchased them! I should take pictures, the leaves on one of them are HUGE!

It's back to work for me next week and then our Pageant is the following week. I know just how fast this end of the year goes. In some respects I look forward to it and summer, and on the other hand, it just means my grandsons will be in 2nd grade....[sigh]

Hi GG, Turnabout! I like it! Actually, I am heavily conflicted. Wouldn't have been so bad If we hadn't heard the oriole :(

A couple more firsts (trying not to think about yesterday), first Rufus Hummingbird of the year spotted this afternoon. And first snake of the year (actually, for last couple years - they have been scarce in the yard). It is around 4 feet long and quite lumpy, eggs or mice, I figure.

I did not notice the lizard coming down the grape vine until I was checking the photo on the pc. Looks like he is eying the gopher snake carefully!

And first hooded oriole offspring sighted at feeders, a young male - young females are hard to tell from adult females.

A couple of diving hummers, they are usually not that orientation.

Bad day for backyard orioles and Sharpie is on my $#!t list. We were enjoying late afternoon on the patio when we hear a rustle then plaintive cries of a bird, then hawk carry off a female oriole. :(

Clear nail polish on pencil tips! I like that! Not really harmful to anyone, but sure puzzling for the foolee, much to the fooler's amusement.

Mozzarella seeds! Yeah, right. I think mozzarella won't breed true from seeds any more than apples will. Maybe if you buy some string cheese, you could take some cuttings, apply a little rooting medium, and plant...?

Hey! I'm in your header! I'm famous!!! LOL
And I'm feeling much better, thanks :)

I'm not much for practical jokes on any day but I do like how the internet responds. Thanks for the tip to look at Google – that was a good one!

Beautiful orioles! And for sure you can't go wrong with tomatoes and basil. Especially if you can can your marinara sauce!
Great. Now I'll have that tune in my head all day.

Hi BC! Must have pasted the wrong code and not previewed!! I think I need a nicer webcam :)
All funny pranks in the poem, maybe if I save them for next year?? We have an office person who has a 'thing' about really short pencils - so I swapped her good ones for a couple gnarly short ones. A bit lame, but oh well! I came across a slightly better idea but since I left my clear nail polish at home (har har!) I couldn't 'paint' over the points of her pencils and pens. Seems like that would be a funny one :)

Hey cp! I guess with a market value of 250 billion $$$, Google can afford to produce a funny prank page :)
We are hoping for a bumper crop of SunGolds and basil this year and if I could only find some Mozzarella seeds - we would be set for patio dining this summer!! No, I don't think that's how that works - but I don't have room in the backyard for a water buffalo. Good luck wit your early starts!

Thanks for mentioning Google that was clever!

Can't have to many Sungold, I started 2 from seed and then my grower has them this year so I picked up a couple. I am actually going to plant a couple of tomatoes out today, earliest ever!!

Silly bot!

Gregory K.

Someone took my toothpaste tube and filled it up with jam.
Someone changed my sandwich into fluffernut-and-ham.
Someone laced my sneakers so they tie down by my toes.
Someone changed the vacuum so it doesn't suck, it blows.
Someone poured the sugar out and filled the bowl with salt.
Someone messed up all the clocks and made it seem my fault.
For me today, I have to say, it's nervousness that rules....
Since all that happened yesterday and now it's April Fools'!

You didn't put the orioles on WU. Bad WTS!
