October Rain!

By: WatchinTheSky , 4:24 PM GMT on October 12, 2012

October 12, mid morning -

Finally, after a week of hearing that the cutoff low will move across SoCal, Thursday through early Friday saw on and off showers with a few bolts of lightning close enough to hear resulting thunder. East Escondido may have received .5" precip, rain gauge was malfunctioning until about 6 PM Thurs and by this morning recorded .20".
All in all, a pleasant early storm and an end to the hot weather of early October - a bit of Fall!
Leftovers from the storm -

What about all those webcams showing up on the home WU home page webcam tab? My zip went from around 30 (manageable) to over 150 (yikes!), lots of traffic cams. Maybe WU should split out non personal/neighborhood cams from traffic/etc. to another tab.

Well, we are really looking forward to our nice 'cool' visit the the park! I just spoke to my daughter who has been there a few times, and she strongly suggested the monkeys and Cheetah run - which you already recommended. She said she preferred this park over the San Diego Zoo! That's some high recommendations!

Thanks for all your help!

Hi WTS! You are right, we did not feel the big earthquake and I haven't seen any reporting on water rises in the Sound. If there was, it had to be super minimal.

But it sure is raining! A tropically originated warm front is making its way through currently and it is warm and wet. So far we have .61" from this one - it has been raining for hours, and other than a short burst in the middle of the night when it was fairly heavy, it has been more of a steady light rain. Currently at 7:30 AM it is 57 degrees - much warmer than it was over the previous couple of weeks. A break this afternoon (with post-frontal gustier winds) will just be a lull until another tropical system arrives Tuesday, with potentially more rain than this one. The second half of October has been such a turn-around in weather, compared to all of the weather since mid July.

Yesterday afternoon three of us from my household took a nice 3 or so mile walk through a nearby wetland/nature preserve that we had never been to before. We were getting in a walk before this rain arrived and while overcast, it was warm then (about 60!) and such a lovely walk through forest, blueberry farm, across a slough and marsh lands as well. We are trying to find and explore new, nearby places and this one was worth it!

OK, I've got a question for you. We are planning our trip to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park on Monday, and it is forecast to be 86┬║. Now I prefer mid 70s, but sometimes mid 80s isn't so bad. (although it's getting pretty warm out to me right now and it's only 83┬║.

Can you be completely honest with me? We can go another day, our LivingSocial coupon is good through December 22. Will that be too hot? Will the animals be hiding? Or is this a good time to go?

We do have a voucher for a tram ride. I'll email you here too!

Hi cp and sp!
Good eye, cp, seeing the tortoise in front of the egret, he's hiding behind the deer grass. He was a present a few years ago from my Mom, not sure how she got it in her car, that's a lot of concrete!
I think Diva is still fine, whether she joined the flock of similar parrots in town or adopted another family as she did us. She flew into our backyard about 4 years before her egret scare. It was clear she had belonged to someone at some point, we tried for a month to locate owners but no luck. That was the beginning of a bird in the family for us, we had no clue!
Egrets and koi ponds, not good combo for sure! Unless you are an egret :)

No winds here yet, as of Thursday noon. Not sure if we still have fire watch or even high wind watch. Wishy washy predictions.

49 here this morning, chilly! WU thinks we will peak at 90 one day - that's workable :)

I like the pic with the egret, I like the tortoise in it ;)).

It was 37 at my place this morning, nice and brisk. It is breezy but not bad, we don't normally get Santa Anas here.

That is to bad about the first parrot, maybe it survived. Egrets have a tendency to clean out fish ponds of their prize koi.

Let's hope the next warm spell is a cooler one.

I thought I left a comment here days ago! Guess not.

Egrets in ditches are hunting, not roadkill! I don't know if they find anything but those ditches get water from ag runoff. All good :)
Glad to know I misread and that Diva flew off (thus may still have lived a happy life) rather than became an inter-clade meal. Still sad that you've missed her companionship, though.

Can't believe you were that close to the shuttle and didn't get out and walk, LOL

Hope the warmup does not lead to fires down there, despite the warnings. I haven't actually read the discussion for here but think we just get the warmth. I am, apparently, the only SoCal wuer who likes it hot. Oh, well. You'll get yours ;)

SBK - Saw the most awesome sunset last night while playing tennis, but no camera :( Used to be sunglasses were in order, now it's lights on to play, definitely shorter days, Ah well..
We almost saw the shuttle last Saturday since we had to be in Inglewood. "Let's detour and check it out as it makes its way on the city streets", us and about a million of our close friends!!! It was LA after all, we got within about a mile and gridlock - we had to give up and make our meeting. We will do the same and check it out at the final resting place later.
Cool here for sure, maybe 75 with mostly low clouds all day. We'll see if we even get drizzle by Sunday :)

I see egrets down by the water occasionally. It was still hot here today, and felt pretty humid too. We should see 70s tomorrow, they say. Maybe even sprinkles Sunday am! We'll see about that! I want cooler temps.

I've also noticed how short the days are getting. Driving home from the boys martial arts class, and then dinner, I noticed how many lights were on at 6:30!!! It's still pretty dusky out at 6:30am when we take the dog for her walk.

We're planning our trip to the wild animal park a week from Monday. I forgot I had to take my mom to the doctor this Monday . Then the next Monday, November 5th, we're going up to see the Endeavor!

Karen - Looks like heat is gone! 101 yesterday, 75 today and maybe 70s for the next week!

sp - oohhhh! that would have been even sadder :(
but first bird and I were out in backyard as usual (bird on shoulder) checking on hummingbird feeders (bird (Diva, as christened by MRS WTS because bird would bite her, 'Your Bird!") was due a wing clip) when an egret flew up the back slope, over the fence and toward us. Startled me, scared the &@!# out of Diva who bolted for the high hills and never came back. Moral is new bird does not go outside when new feathers are in!

Oh how cool! I never get egrets in my yard. Well, balcony ;) Do see them in ditches by the freeway sometimes.
An egret ate your parrot? Okay, that's new. Also, sad.

It does look like it will cool off by the weekend. Such is life!

Hmmm.. Fall in Escondido. Last Thursday cool and rainy, 101 today, maybe 70s by this weekend. May get through October with no big east winds, that would be nice.

Mrs WTS got a cellphone pic of a visitor to the backyard today, I don't think it would fit in the birdbath -

An egret much like this one cost me my first parrot (same as my profile pic).

Hi sp, I am surprised you did not get any rain, I thought it seemed to be mostly going north. Is that what rain looks like :) I forgot!
Yes, looks like 90s most of the week.

I noticed this AM we were back to just the WU cams again, not sure what that was all about. If they put the ca-dot cams on their own tab - that would occasionally be helpful when checking traffic (for those in clog prone areas). Traffic reports are always 30-60 minutes behind and map programs with traffic don't really tell the story - a picture worth a thousand words?

You got rain! Lucky :)
I heard thunder and I saw rain across the valley and also to the north over the mountains. Just a few (countable) drops here. Smelled nice all day Thursday, anyway.
Not the end of the hot weather. It got to 95 degrees yesterday with humidity down to 20%. Currently 90 degrees and 25%. Perfect!
Well, for some of us.
That's a great picture of the storm clouds. Here's hoping you'll get many more in the coming months!

The webcams - I don't even look through the 60 that show on the homepage here. Takes too long. No way I'd go through 150! If I want to see webcams on WU I go to the wundermap and turn on that layer (and turn all other layers off) and poke around for ones I want.

Hi PSP, first indeed! I recall hearing that storms are starting to line up off your coast, so maybe more frequent rain is on the way. Will watch for new photos - sounds like they should be great :)

Hey Karen - if by 'warm up' you mean 94 by 11 AM, sigh, I guess so! That rain and thunder (the 2 or 3 cracks that we got here) was a nice treat. Drying out fast this week. Next week is supposed to be much cooler, maybe back to fall!

I woke up at 5:30AM on Thursday as I normally do, and walked out to my living room to sit down and stretch, as I normally do. I was treated to a wonderful light show! Thunder and rain accompanied it! It rained off and on Thursday, and I actually drove through a very short shower today...really more of a sprinkle shower. Are you ready to warm back up?

We are contemplating heading down to the Animal Park a week from Monday!

First! For a first time!

Our first drops of rain in a long time also fell today! The west coast must be wringing wet now! Ha! Not much has fallen for us so far, but the weekend will usher in the first real fall storm. We need it.

But, Mr. PSP and I just returned last night from three glorious days at Mt. Rainier - stayed in the national park at the only remaining open (winter season now) lodge and we NEVER saw a single cloud! Brilliant sunshine and the most amazing fall color we have ever seen! Wonderful trip! Look for some photos hopefully soon.
