TROPICAL STORM CHANTAL FORMS...

By: WCSC, 2:33 PM GMT on July 31, 2007

Early Tuesday morning, Tropical Depression #3 was upgraded to Tropical Storm Chantal. Chantal is a minimal tropical storm with winds near 40 mph. Chantal is located about 300 miles south of Nova Scotia, Canada and will race northeast into the North Atlantic. This tropical storm will most likely not become a hurricane and does not pose a threat to the U.S.

Elsewhere, a tropical wave is slowly developing east of the Windward Islands in the deep tropics. This storm has the potential to become a tropical depression or storm over the next couple of days. It continues to show signs of organization and we will watch it carefully and keep you updated. This wave is forecast to move into the Caribbean Sea by the weekend. We will continue to monitor this system over the next several days.

TROPICS STILL QUIET, FOR NOW...

By: WCSC, 8:32 PM GMT on July 16, 2007

Well here we are in the middle of July and so far only two named storms. In fact, nothing has happened in the Atlantic Basin since Tropical Storm Barry brought very beneficial rains to the southeast in early June. A parade of cold fronts over the past several weeks has suppressed tropical activity across the western Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico. However, a significant change to the overall weather pattern will be taking place next week. A large ridge of high pressure will take hold across the midsection of the United States. This in combination with the Bermuda High over the Atlantic will allow for a more favorable tropical weather pattern to take shape as we head into August. The big question is, will this pattern remain with us through August and September or will a trough re-establish itself across the eastern half of the U.S. Only time will tell, but do expect tropical activity to increase over the next few weeks.
