We have the choice

By: TropicTraveler , 12:47 PM GMT on March 10, 2009

We have the choice to try for a new world every day, to tell what we know of the truth every day, to take small actions every day. A.L. Kennedy

As some of you know, I'm a retired person but do disaster relief work about six months of each year. Because of that I find myself spending time in new places and new communities on a regular basis. The work isn't glamorous and sometimes it seems like I'm making no progress at all in making things better.

There are thousands of relief workers just like me -behind the scenes, doing their work out of the spotlight, many of them like me closer to 70 than 60 years old.As I grow older I look back at a lot of small actions and feel satisfied that I did what I could.

Thanks to all of you - I'm actually in Marion, Illinois. Straight line winds knocked down houses, forests, all sorts of things around 1st on May. Home for a few weeks then as you know hurricane season is upon us. I swear it keeps us older folks young to be contributing and helping out for this stuff. I highly recommend it as you grow older. Instead of being a drain on the planet - we can still make a difference, one person at a time.

Well, Hello!
Didn't realize you were back!

Very nice blog post. Our retiree population is one of our greatest assets in this nation. Many put their years of experience and knowledge to good use helping others, whether through relief work, helping with schools or organizations that make life better for childeren, or various and countless other projects in their communities.

And you are right, countless small acts of kindness do so much more to change the world for the better than could ever be accomplished by a few large organizations. I am honored to have met many folks here on the WU that make such a positive impact.
