Kansas City Drought Continues

By: Skyzics, 11:56 AM GMT on August 26, 2012

Although the wettest system of the 2012 summer season so far brought some much needed significant moisture to much of Kansas and parts of western Missouri, only a third of an inch fell at my location in Kansas City, KS, over the course of the two-day system. The entire Kansas City metro area received insufficient precipitation to put a dent in the ongoing drought.

Storm total radar precipitation accumulation from Kansas City and Topeka NWS radars tell the disappointing story:

This was a typical fickle summer system offering hit and miss heavy rainfall. However, a majority of Kansas did receive significant (beneficial) rainfall. Unfortunately, the rainfall in the Kansas City and surrounding area was not sufficient to make the slightest dent in the ongoing drought. Congratulations to those in the Wichita, Emporia and Topeka areas, as well as far northwest Missouri and parts of southwest Missouri on their beneficial rains.

Some storm totals (23rd-26th of August) and monthly totals to date include:

GLD Goodland, KS...............0.04...1.71
DDC Dodge City KS..............1.71...3.24
SLN Salina KS..................1.38...2.70
MHK Manhattan KS...............3.95...5.04
CNK Concordia KS...............1.80...3.44
ICT Wichita KS.................3.03...3.38
EMP Emporia KS.................2.20...3.06
TOP Topeka KS..................2.82...3.36
CNU Chanute KS.................1.80...2.45
LWC Lawrence KS................0.47...1.60
OTH Olathe KS..................0.21...0.52
MCI Kansas City Intl Arpt......0.48...1.13
MKC Kansas City Downtown.......0.15...0.55
KKSKANSA15 Kansas City KS......0.33...0.98

ADDITIONAL KKSKANSA15 RAINFALL DATA:

August to date: 0.98 inches.
July precipitation: 0.70 inches.
June precipitation: 2.28 inches.
2012 THROUGH 8/26: 16.68 inches.

PREVIOUS YEARS TO DATE AT MY LOCATION:

2011 THROUGH 8/26: 29.76 INCHES
2010 THROUGH 8/26: 33.89 INCHES
2009 THROUGH 8/26: 39.37 INCHES
2008 THROUGH 8/26: 35.52 INCHES

Of course, in addition to the lack of rainfall, temperatures have been much warmer than normal. (However, the humidity has been considerably lower than normal - not a bad thing for general comfort levels compared to a 'normal' summer in this area which is usually like a sauna.)

Days of 100 degrees or warmer:

June: 5. Warmest 106 on the 26th.
July: 16. Warmest 107 on the 29th.
August: 3. Warmest 105 on the 7th.
Total days 100 degrees or warmer: 24.

Typically the number of 100 degree or warmer days in a summer season is in the single digits, with occasional 'cooler' summers failing to reach 100 degrees.

July temperature statistics:

July Average Daily Maximum: 98.7
July Average Daily Minimum: 75.5
July Coolest Daily Maximum: 85 on the 13th.
July Warmest Daily Minimum: 84 on the 25th.
July Daily Minimum: 68 on the 10th and 14th.
