For the last few days and nights I can hear the sound of jets flying back and forth overhead. Hundreds of sorties, each one a reminder of the men and women serving in our military. They are training at the Avon Park Range, about 3o miles north of me. Training to do whatever our nation asks them to do.
After their training they will no doubt return to their squadrons serving on ships at sea or at bases around the world, many far from home. The same is true of any of the forces; soldiers, pilots, sailors, support personnel...they may be sent to a frigid outpost guarding a border, perhaps a desert, maybe a ship or submarine, but the point is most of them leave all that they know and love behind to do a job that their nation...Us...asks them to do. They risk all for us, just following orders. They can't be home for the holidays, a thing most of us take for granted. Some will even have children born this month. They'll miss out on that too.
So, the point of this blog is to remind us all to take the time to appreciate the sacrifices they make and to find a way to show gratitude. Most of you probably know someone in the service. There are also organizations that collect and forward cards and letters or care packages to them. Maybe you'll see a couple soldiers at a restaurant and can pick up their tab. If you are traveling and meet a soldier at the hotel lounge, maybe buy his drink. But anyone can walk up to one of the folks and shake their hand and say "Thank You!"
It means more to them than you will ever know.
Remember, it's not about the politics, it's about showing support for those who serve and protect - Good people doing their best at a very difficult job.
As always, we don’t have to stick to the blog topic, just have good clean fun, but I do hope that anyone reading this who is involved in an effort to show support for and bring holiday cheer to our military personnel will share it here.
