The weather has been miserably the same for a month straight now. Shreveport finally granted McCurtain County a Heat Advisory status today, even though we were the only county in Oklahoma not under that condition during the entire past week, and even Texas to the south of us didn't get that listing.

Statement from the National Weather Service on wednesday aug 3, 2011[revised]

The National Weather Service in Shreveport has issued an excessive heat warning... which has now been extended through 7 PM CDT Thursday.

* Event... temperatures this afternoon will range from 104 to 112 degrees. These very hot temperatures will combine with elevated humidity levels to produce heat index values between 110 and 120 degrees!

* Timing... heat index values will reach or exceed 110 degrees around noon and thursday too

* Impact... the risk for heat related illnesses will be high...especially for those who work or play outdoors or in insufficiently cooled buildings.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible... reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke... such as cramps or nausea and headache with profuse sweating or worse... no sweating with a hot dry skin and dizziness or confusion. It is best to wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water before... during and after exposure to the heat.

To reduce risk during outdoor work... the occupational safety and health administration
[ OSHA ] recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.
Heat stroke is an emergency - call 9 1 1.
