A Lurker's Thoughts On Dr. Masters Blog & How To Put Someone On Ignore

By: Kumo , 2:04 AM GMT on July 30, 2013

A bit of an introduction.

While I rarely put my own thoughts on the blog (My knowledge of how the tropical weather works is still very limited), sometimes I'll comment with a smart-ass remark or discuss about AGW. You probably won't hear a peep from me though during the heart of Hurricane season, for good reason. It's more about being considerate for the folks that need to access current information when a major storm is bearing down on their location.

I've been following the blog since the 2010 Hurricane season when I moved to the Houston area. I really like the information and analysis that some of the members provide here as well as the comedy that often ensues on the board. There are some awesome folks here, but there are also some others that need to learn some self control before they go about typing down their thoughts. I've got two lists of what I would like to see and what I don't enjoy looking at while I lurk.

Why I visit this blog

- Informative discussion full of analysis on current weather systems or anything dealing with AGW during the the off season.

- Comic replies and witty commentary - However it has it's place, making a joke when a major hurricane is bearing down on a populated area is inconsiderate and not the right time.

What get's someone on my ignore list

- Members that are too high up on their horse. Being arrogant can be a boon in certain situations, but when it is done without regard for fellow members (calling someone else's idea stupid because you don't agree with it), you'll always make more enemies than friends.

- The "short bus" riders. No offense to special needs people, but I am not interested in seeing a photo spam of your winning lottery scratcher, the prepackaged food you recently ate and unintelligible commentary about some storm that never even came close to your location. Some of you may know exactly who I am talking about. :(

- Trolls. Skillful trolls are actually kind of funny sometimes, but Dr. Masters blog is not the place for them. All of the failures that I have seen here so far cannot even hope to compete on that kind of level.

- People that post a bunch of useless or non-relevant information when we have a major or strong storm in the Atlantic basin that is a current threat to people or property. Please stop, you aren't helping them or their situation.

How To Use The WU Blog's Ignore Feature

1. You must activate your own blog, however you do not have to post anything in it.

2. Hit the minus (-) symbol on the offending post, you may report them too (!) if they really crossed the line.

3. At the bottom of their post you should see Ignore, click on it.

4. In the new window, confirm that the user that you want to ignore has been added to the list and then click on the (Update Ignored List) button.

Unless someone quotes them, you shouldn't see them anymore.

If you haven't already, try it out. It will definitely make lurking a lot easier and less time consuming.
