A WunderPhoto-graphic Salute to Earth Day

By: Bob Henson 4:55 PM GMT on April 22, 2016

Today is the 47th annual Earth Day, a day to celebrate the beauty of the atmosphere, oceans, and biosphere of the planet that sustains us. This week I’ve had the distinct pleasure of picking a few of my favorite WunderPhotos uploaded to our website over the past year, in keeping with the Earth Day tradition established by Dr. Jeff Masters (who’s off today). The photos below are all drawn from our World View Gallery, which is updated weekly with the top WunderPhotos of the week.

Our thanks go out to all of you who have participated in making ours the largest (now 1.9 million!) and best weather photo gallery on the Internet. As someone who enjoys landscape and sky photography, I find it a never-ending treat to peruse the meteorological eye candy our members post each day. It’s also fun to see the shout-outs and high-fives that many of our photos receive in the comments section beneath each image. Thanks again for making WunderPhotos the eye-popping site that it is. Here’s to a meaningful and enjoyable Earth Day, from all of us at WU.

We're having some technical issues with getting the new blog posted---

Our low is coming together nicely. We should see Bonnie tomorrow or Wednesday.
This is an awesome blog!
A fungus species naturally occurring in the Amazon named Pestalotiopsis microspora, has been found with the ability to survive off a diet entirely of plastic!

What's even more remarkable, is that it is an edible mushroom that also can survive in anaerobic environments. This could possibly be major breakthrough in the plastic waste crisis that we face today:

Link

From the article:

"Pestalotiopsis microspora (not shown) is a resident of the Ecuadorian rainforest and was discovered by a group of student researchers led by molecular biochemistry professor Scott Strobel as part of Yale's annual Rainforest Expedition and Laboratory. It's the first fungus species to be able to survive exclusively on polyurethane and, more importantly, able to do so in anaerobic conditions—the same conditions found in the bottom of landfills. This makes the fungus a prime candidate for bioremediation projects that could finally provide an alternative to just burying the plastic and hoping for the best. "
I like clowns, I really do, but when they repeat the same lines and say the same ridiculous things then they become obnoxious, irrelevant, and sad little clowns unable or unwilling to change. Just how many days must we keep responding to NativSun? He's not listening, he's only aim is to cause strife and be obnoxious. It's infantile and to be honest, a little sad, but we keep taking the chum when he throws it in the water here. I think it would be great if he were utterly ignored by all here every day. It's glaringly obvious it's the attention he really craves.. Clearly he has no real interest in AGW nor climate.

NativSun gets quoted here more than anyone. That's not okay. He's a classic troll. He cares little for climate or AGW. What he cares about is the attention he gets here. I would to see him ignored by all here. This is a petty irritant of a game he's playing here, let's stop participating with this obnoxious and childish person. Too bad the gravity and seriousness of what's happening doesn't seem to matter to him.

Some of you keep making reference to "coincidence?".
There are no coincidences.

Later this afternoon and especially tonight we'll get a better picture of exactly when and where the storms will initiate. Those early isolated supercells are the ones to really watch.
But it looks like the line will fully develop all the way down into Texas.

apart from the cold SST in the far eastern and part of the central atlantic, the MDR will have to be watch very closely this hurricane season as most of the ingredients are beginning to gel for a active season.

all that is needed now is for the atlantic to warm up. somehow it looks the 2016 hurricane season will be more active than forecast.

If a Sherman Tank were poorly armored enough that a bee-bee gun could penetrate, than it would have about the same armor characteristics as your skin. At that level, it would be about as thin as tin foil and wouldn't stand up under its own weight. Also, any bee-bee round that penetrated said skin, would lose so much velocity upon entering the tank as to be unnoticeable. A tank like that would be under more danger from drunks throwing rocks.

Also, if a bee-bee gun were big enough to penetrate an actual Sherman Tank, then by definition, it's no longer a bee-bee gun and is instead called a Bazooka (in this case probably the M9 variation).

The more you spit out inane comments, the more my level of knowledge grows as I care about actually learning things, instead of just being aggravating.

It could also depend on the size, and what makes up the BB in the gun, and as far as Sherman tanks, those armor piercing BB's might destroy a poorly armored tank like a Sherman.

Noticed lawn grass is wilting in the DC suburbs on this fine day in late APRIL! Dry!

I guess in all depends on where you live, the soil here where I live in Tallahassee holds water well, so it can take weeks without water for the grass to die, and the only time I saw grass die from something other than the natural winter cold was 2 years ago in the fall where we went 4 weeks here without rain.

Where my parents live in Central Florida, the soil n that immediate area is very sandy, so if say it rains 5 inches in a week, the grass will grow thick and green, but even after all that rain, a week without heavy rain will get the grass wilting again. While there is a nature park 4 miles away that has thick green grass even during drought in the winter, and it's not watered lol. The soil is much darker and richer there, and thus there is also a lot of forest canopy at that nature park compared to near my neighborhood where the sandy soil keeps trees in the 50-70 ft range max height compared to the nature park a few miles away where oaks and pines grow over 100 ft in many cases.

It's amazing how much soil type impacts plant growth.

Ah yes, “Civilization Will End Within 15 or 30 Years.” Didnt happen.

Where is your source? Who said this? What was the context?

Here you go: " “Civilization Will End Within 15 or 30 Years.”
Harvard biologist Dr. George Wald warned shortly before the first Earth Day in 1970 that civilization would soon end “unless immediate action is taken against problems facing mankind.” Three years before his projection, Wald was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine.
Wald was a vocal opponent of the Vietnam War and the nuclear arms race. He even flew to Moscow at one point to advise the leader of the Soviet Union on environmental policy."

" Must have had some pretty wondrous policy changes to avoid it. Ya think? Did Reagan in addition to winning the Cold War, save civilization on the side?

Reagan didn't win the Cold War. Economics did. The USSR was running on fumes well before Reagan made it too office."

That is your personal opinion. The overwhelming evidence is that his "Reagan Doctrine' of giving light infantry weapons to anti communist guerrillas fighting Soviet wars of colonial conquest in Afghanistan, Angola, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Somalia and Nicaragua caused the overextended Soviet Empire to collapse. Try to keep up.

" Then there is the prediction that "“By the Year 2000 … There Won’t Be Any More Crude Oil.”

Who said that? " Answer: ecologist Kenneth Watt Again. Go to the link

Huh? "No source, citation, or evidence" that " I believe that man made global warming exists?

And you in turn are making a subjective, no make that a ludicrous judgement, that predicting that "Civilization will end in 15 or 30 years" is not alarmist"

What's wrong with the blog.
SPC doesn't think there will be a need for a upgrade to a High Risk day tomorrow.

"THE STRENGTH OF THE LOW-LEVEL WINDS
IS THE PRIMARY FACTOR ANTICIPATED TO LIMIT HIGHER-END SEVERE
POTENTIAL -- I.E. NUMEROUS LONG-TRACK TORNADOES -- PRECLUDING THE
NEED FOR AN UPGRADE TO HIGH RISK WITH THIS FORECAST. THAT BEING
SAID...NUMEROUS SEVERE TSTMS ARE STILL ANTICIPATED WITH ALL SEVERE
THREATS POSSIBLE...INCLUDING VERY LARGE HAIL AND A STRONG TORNADO OR
TWO."

Civilization Will End Within 15 or 30 Years.

Was mainly based on if Nuclear wars start then they'll (countries with Nuclear bombs) escalate those wars and after 15-30 years of Nuclear warring guess what?, more Great lakes with glowing fishy...no... civilization ends as we know it unless you have some magic bunker.

MY STATEMENT:: Reagan rode the wave of straining economies.

Both USofA and Russia suffered from ex communist Ronald Reagan's policies (you know he tried and to some part was a bonafied (can i ay that here) communist in his young adulthood) but Russia was worse off ,  due to their style of governing (less freedom similar to how big companies like to rule their workers) and limited natural food resources.

ALL SIDES SUFFERED (remember how bad the US ecoNOmoney  situation was.  Oh wait people where so drugged up in the 1980s they cannot remember if they said no to drugs, drugs that were pick and chosen by certain USofA inner circle dealing with South American traffickers) but USofA just made it by, thanks to hard working farmers & immigrants  that kept food on our tables or potato chips in our bags.

If you placed Reagan in a similar situation in the future and Russia has that underground oil lake that is near their border (why USofA is really battling over there as in Iraq, playing nice with Iran, Afghanistan even smidgen of Turkey) Guess who will win when USofA runs out of fuel that comes from the limits of digging instead of using fuels whose limits are seemingly endless as sun / wind, .things which are ALREADY in motion thus so little overhead (as in forcing fuel through twist n turns engines/filters that add to final costs) and has much less pollutants, as that amount of oil near the newer Russian borders even beats all of USofA coal, not o mention we'll die from black lung if we have to only use that for hundreds of years.

This belief that Reagan won is really more as that quote of Napoleon, Winston Churchill & Tony the armed thief from Da BronX that "gawd is on the side of those that have the bigger guns", so Reagan playing Russian Roulette with the world economy as was done just when Russia was suffering the most which to be honest was the best time to do it (if you are in the USofA) but it led in-part to the drug crisis hear in the USofA as so many used drugs to cover /hide their economic downfall pains (jobless etc) and those "hand" selected cartels gladly supplied those drugs.  You really think that all those tons of drugs getting into the USofA can really get past so many drug sniffing dogs not to mention Carlos Flanagin the local meth dealers nose without some underhanded dealings going down.  To be clear i'm not saying Reagan new he was more of an opportunist throughout his life, when it best suited him he was a communist when it best suited him he was a far righteous dude add to that handsome on TV a-lot and vwalla you have a republican Clinton, though it seems Clinton learned a uh hard lesson so he middle of the road -it afterwards. (so much humor i cannot say)

Concerned scientists are not trying to alarm us but educate us one step at a time (appears as many steps to some cause skeptics keep pushing back science advancements as in Australia so with all the backlogging of science discoveries we are now implementing laws that should have been implemented during the 1960s-1970s so that by now air would be cleaner, inventions to help lower the use of oil by 50% AND AS IMPORTANT help save jobs and keep Koch bros. happy as those new energy sources would be safer just as good in making Koch Bros filthy rich (super rich okay no problem as long as its not blood money, then it becomes filthy rich) and help factories and workers easily shift to the new jobs created by the new safer fuels but nooooooooooooo some people that resembles Wacahootaman style of thinking i the 1950s-1980s delayed delayed delayed cause they where afraid of change even after it was shown that the change was for the better tat all that buck passing has us bucked up.

The people whom have greed on their breath be it direct greed (the actual filthy money holders) or indirect greed (workers whom instead of helping solve economic issues just say what the company line is which in time hurts them/family more) look for comments that are correct but they don't like.  Then take time their precious time not to help humanity but to to paint a picture using misquotes. Those misquoted comments /snippets are then popularize then someone like you for whatever reason help throw those comments on blogs hoping they stick and since many people for whatever reason are less educated or more important not willing to learn be it their choosing or social / health reasons here we are where your mis-quotes have the same level of presentation as the writers of this blog whom do there best to present information that is meant to help all even inconsiderate blog members as Wacahootaman (name reminds me of a rock roll tune of the 1980s i was in the bkgnd of as it was being taped - cameraman) . (did not say person/people but your username or blog member as you could be a great person to family friends but on this blog you are a blog member none of that)

"Flint lead" ring a bell.

Watch in 10-20rs you'll be posting::

WHERE IS THE BRAIN DAMAGE that scientist said would happen due to high co2 level, Well CO2 i high at 500ppm!!!! (by then)

But if you read and quote FULLY what scientist state is that higher levels of CO2 cause brain cells to first not "dance as lightly" means think easily, then cells die off (why one should not run car engine in enclosed areas) Then scientist state when co2 levels reach levels of 1000PPM humanity is in deep derp...well not the derp but their words where in deep trouble, so i changed words but not meaning of words.

But again you will pick n choose the words carefully so it reads scientist said in 2015 that high co2 will kill humans then add WE:: its 20-50 were still here (cough cough) as you use spell check to see if you spelled "i" correctly cause your brain is not running just enough too the right. (see what i did there right as political but right as in right side control imaginative thoughts be they used for good or bad purposes.

We should create the golden twisty awards (golden pretzel with salt that reads "misquoting etc etc") and present skeptic$ with it every time they twist scientists comments.

i can hear Taz saying why didn't the blog crash as vis0 posted , Y!!!!!!!!!!!!

A nuclear war would last only one or two days at the most. That is how quick and total the destruction would be. The man was clearly referring to ecological disasters ending civilization in 15 to 30 years.

Evening all.

What an inspiring gallery of images! It reminds us that keeping our earth as healthy as possible is worth it.

It also reminds me that I haven't posted very much imagery myself since 2016 began ... gotta make some time to enjoy the beauty that's out there ... and share it with everyone, the way these WUbloggers have done.

Hope everyone had a great Earth Day!
