Category 4 Ian Pounds Tonga; 91W Kills 20 in Philippines; First Tornadoes of 2014

By: Dr. Jeff Masters, 2:55 AM GMT on January 13, 2014

The year 2014 has just begun, but the tropical cyclone seasons in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres have already claimed victims. Summer is in full bloom in the Southern Hemisphere, where two Category 4 storms formed last week: Tropical Cyclone Colin, which reached sustained winds of 135 mph midway between Madagascar and Australia on January 11, and Tropical Cyclone Ian, which intensified into a powerful Category 4 storm with 145 mph winds before roaring through the South Pacific islands of Tonga over the weekend. At least one death is being blamed on the storm in the northern Ha'apai Islands of Tonga, home to 8,000 people, and 70% of the buildings were damaged or destroyed, according to the Australia Network News. Tonga is an archipelago of 176 islands, with 100,000 people living on the 36 most populated islands. The economy relies on fish exports, tourism, and money from Tongans living overseas. About 40% of the population lives in poverty.

In the Philippines, heavy rains from tropical disturbance 91W have triggered flash floods and mudslides that are being blamed for twenty deaths on the southern island of Mindanao on Saturday, with thirteen other people missing. Twenty-four hour rainfall amounts in excess of 300 mm (11.81") fell in northeast Mindanao, according to Project NOAH. The disturbance will move slowly north over the islands through Tuesday, and bring torrential rains in excess of 5" to the islands of Leyte and Samar, ravaged by Super Typhoon Haiyan in November.

First U.S. Tornadoes of 2014 hit Virginia and Georgia
A modest severe weather outbreak over the Southeast U.S. on Saturday, January 11, brought the first tornadoes of 2014: three to Virginia, and one to Georgia:

1. EF-0 tornado near Waleska in Cherokee Co, GA, 3 mile path length, downed trees, damaged fence.

2. EF-0 in Isle of Wight Co., VA, 70-75 mph, 2 mile path, 50 yards wide, trees down, roof damage to homes, no injuries.

3. EF-0 near Smithfield, VA, EF-0, 75-80 mph, 1.4 mile path, 100 yards wide, trees down onto homes, no injuries.

4. EF-0 tornado in Hampton, VA, 80 mph, 1.25 mile path, 75 yards wide; trees snapped, shingles off homes, roof off City of Hampton school maintenance compound; Fox Hill Athletic Association building destroyed.

The strongest wind gust ever recorded at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, 86 mph, occurred at 1:57 PM Saturday, when a line of thunderstorms roared through central North Carolina.

Already have people asking me about super bowl weather
which is TWENTY days out!

I'll just tell them (after repeating the word TWENTY a few times in various sentences) of a HINT of negative NAO and western ridge eastern trough, perhaps interesting but check back in eleven days when we're in the (very modest) skill range.

Why have an outdoor super bowl in a northeastern venue that is at risk for bad weather??!!

And you know the weather is dull when a non fan like me talks about sports!
The NAO is gonna go negative in late Jan into Feb. GFS already hinting at a storm Jan 22-23.

I got the shot and didn't die. I noticed Skye posted how there have been 12 flu deaths in part of Florida recently. 11 of those deaths had not had the shot. The deaths included 5 people under 40.

LONG TERM (THURSDAY-MONDAY)...
THE EXTENDED PERIOD WILL BEGIN WITH THE CONTINUATION OF COLD AIR
ADVECTION ALONG WITH INTRUSION OF VERY DRY AIR. BY THURSDAY NIGHT,
THE HIGH PRESSURE WILL SHIFT TO THE FLORIDA PENINSULA.
TEMPERATURES ON THURSDAY AFTERNOON WILL STRUGGLE TO REACH THE
LOWER 60S WITH A GOOD RADIATIONAL COOLING NIGHT SETTING UP FOR
THURSDAY NIGHT/FRIDAY MORNING AS THE AIRMASS WILL BE VERY DRY (DEW

Me and my family get the flu shot every year. Even when the flu goes around my son's school we get nary a sniffle.

The vaccine contains inert virus material. It isn't going to infect you. What it does do is trigger an immune response so your body builds antibodies to protect against the foreign proteins of the virus.

This is the same process that happens in your body when you get infected by a live virus, except then it becomes a race between how fast your body can ramp up to fight of the live multiplying virus. And you get all the lovely flu symptoms to go along with it.

While I agree with you on the inert and that the chances of it affecting you are small. It CAN affect you. I still get the Flu shot and my kids do.

Event into space in USA on Monday, 13 January, 2014 at 04:25 (04:25 AM) UTC.
Description
John and Marianna Connolly of Williamsburg were going on a stroll in Look Park at dusk when they were shocked to see a "fireball" streak across the sky overhead. "I thought it was fireworks at first, but it was way up there," John Connolly said Sunday, soon after seeing the object at about 5:10 p.m. "It was way brighter than any meteorite I’ve seen." Similar reports from people all over New England, New York and New Jersey flooded Twitter and the website of the National Meteor Society soon afterward. Of the 90 reports of the bright object on the website, called a meteorite or fireball by many, 17 were from Massachusetts, including one from Amherst. Connolly said the fireball was about five times bigger and hundreds of times brighter than most meteorites he has seen. He said it glowed blue and orange as it traveled for three or four seconds northeast across the sky before disappearing behind clouds. Whatever it was, he said, "it was in the atmosphere for sure, it was burning up." He noted that it was not completely dark out at the time, and usually meteors are only visible when it is completely dark. "This was very bright, as bright as the moon," he said. Neither he or his wife heard any noise when they saw the fireball, he said. A report from Rollingsford, N.H., said the fireball appeared to be about the size of a quarter when held at arm’s length and had a trail of sparks. Others commented that it left a green trail and appeared low in the sky.
Flash Flood in Indonesia on Monday, 13 January, 2014 at 06:06 (06:06 AM) UTC.
Description
Torrential rains since Sunday, Jan.12 that lead to floods in the capital city, have forced 5,125 Jakarta residents to evacuate their homes. "Up until 7 a.m. Monday, floods had inundated 31 sub districts in 18 districts of Jakarta," stated The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, here on Monday. Based on the agencys flood impact data, the number of houses inundated reached 7,367 houses with 24,269 people, in Jakarta. At least 5,125 evacuees have been accommodated in 35 evacuation shelters across the capital. The heights of the flood varied in several places; four meters high flood was reported in Cawang sub-district, Kramat Jati, East Jakarta. The four worst flood affected areas in East Jakarta are Cawang, Cililitan, Bidara China and Kampung Melayu. In Kampung Melayu, East Jakarta, at least 1,508 homes have inundated with floods, forcing 212 out of the 3,427 residents to evacuee. "Most of the residents do not want to evacuate despite floods that have reached 100-250 cm," Sutopo noted. While in Cawang, Kramat Jati, East Jakarta, 50-400 cm of flood water inundated a total of 1,944 homes with 6,293 inhabitants and displaced at least 3,446 people from their homes. Residents of the area moved to the nearby supermarket area, integrated Health Posts, office buildings, mosques and the local elementary school. Rains hit the capital city on Sunday, Jan. 12, continuing with heavy showers through Monday, leading to the overflow of major rivers and flooding the nearby residential areas. Besides affecting homes, the floods have also blocked a number of roads in Jakarta such as TB Simatupang Road in South Jakarta, Gunung Sahari Road in Central Jakarta, Kelapa Gading Road in East Jakarta and several others. Based on Antara observation, the water in the Katulampa sluice gate in Bogor, West Java has reached a height of 130 cm, and 810 cm in Manggarai Sluice gate in Jakarta, putting Jakarta residents on a high flood alert for the next few days.

Dozens of people reported fallen items in their home and feeling buildings sway in the capital of San Juan, about 59 miles (96 kilometers) from the quake's epicenter. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.5 and struck just after midnight about 34 miles (56 kilometers) north of Hatillo. Good that you're feeling better. Those events with thousands of folks from all over the country can be incubators for germ transmission. It's true.
We're all the best judge of our own  bodies, how we react to medications, different foods, different weather, etc. My own mother has never had a flu shot and never had the flu. She knows her body. I can't argue with her, she's my mom.
The full unique picture imo is something no doctor or group of doctors can know, it's too comprehensive...only you or I have the full picture. And we each make our own decisions.

Good. The best thing you can do for yourself between now and then is to wash your hands (with soap) frequently, and before touching your mouth/face. It takes about 2 weeks for the dead viruses in a flu shot to provide effective immunization.

That said, even with a flu shot, you can still get the flu... but the vaccine this year matched up VERY well with the strains going around. This year, the vaccine is providing roughly 60% immunity against the prevalent strains, with the remaining 40% getting sick, but having a mild case of the flu, versus a severe case - especially with H1N1.

If you look at the correlation coefficient, it doesn't look anything like the real rain coming in from the northwest. Differential reflectivity also make it look very different. Dual polarity radar products showing their worth.

If you look at the MIA radar earlier it totally looks like chaff being released.

Here's an article from the SunSentinal, local down there, put out a year ago. They say Jan & Feb is heavy chaff season for SFL...

Trice Denny, spokeswoman for the Naval Air Station Key West, said the chaff is being used as part of a training exercise to confuse enemy radars in aircraft.

On radar, it looks like rain.

But it's really clouds of aluminum-coated glass fibers called chaff. And this week, U.S. Navy jets have been dropping the stuff as part of military training exercises near Key West.

"We have a number of fighter jet squadrons in town for training," she said. "January and February are typically very busy for us as the weather in other parts of the country can prohibit fighter jet training."

Studies have shown the chaff, which is primarily dropped over water, does not hurt the environment or marine animals, said Ted Brown, Navy installations and environmental public affairs officer for the U.S. Fleet Forces Command.

"The materials in chaff are generally nontoxic in the marine environment," he said. "Fish that ingested high concentrations of chaff under experimental laboratory conditions showed no negative impacts."

Looks like Naval Air Station Key West operations were expanded...The training increases include more air combat maneuvers such as dog fights between planes, from 5,700 per year up to 6,840; an increase in air platform testing from 10 to 12 per year; an increase in gunnery exercises from 36 to 70 per year involving 56,000 non-explosive rounds going into the water; flare exercises using more than 4,500 flares; and the annual release of 30,000 canisters of chaff, a radar-fooling countermeasure.

I personally love the bone chilling cold, even despite it taking a toll on my fruits and vegetables. I just want to see it actually snow down here like it did in '77. Want to be able to record it on film.

I don't know man, it would be fun to see snow. But last week when we had 2 days with highs barely above freezing and lows around 20 with strong gusty winds bringing wind chills as low as 8, it was fun while it last but I wouldn't want it to stay that way. It made me just want to fall asleep.

Sure its great weather to have if you're talking a Sunday afternoon and you have no work to do, but it made me sleepy and that's not good when you're busy with lots of school work.

50's for highs and lows a bit below freezing with sunny days is a nice winter chill that more invigorating rather than sleepy and its great weather to get exercise in, so I like it.
STATEMENT FROM THE WEATHER COMPANY CHAIRMAN AND CEO DAVID KENNY

ATLANTA -- January 14, 2014 -- At 12:01 this morning, The Weather Channel is no longer available on DIRECTV, which refused to come to an agreement on a market-based carriage deal. Following is a statement from David Kenny, chairman and CEO of The Weather Company:

“This is unprecedented for The Weather Channel. In our 32 years, we have never had a significant disruption due to a failure to reach a carriage agreement. We offered DIRECTV the best rate for our programming, and I am shocked they have put corporate profits ahead of keeping a trusted channel that subscribers rely on every day. We are not looking for a large fee increase. We are simply looking for a fair deal that allows our company to continue to invest in the science and technology that enables us to keep people safe, deliver the world’s best weather, and tell weather stories to help people be prepared and informed.

“At a time when DIRECTV has increased customer rates by 4 percent, they are trading safety for increased profits and replacing the experience and expertise of The Weather Channel with a cheap startup that does weather forecasting on a three-hour taped loop, has no field coverage, no weather experts -- certainly not any on par with The Weather Channel network’s industry-recognized experts like tornado expert Dr. Greg Forbes and winter weather expert Tom Niziol -- and no experience in severe weather emergencies. This is a dangerous gamble over one penny a month that puts DIRECTV customers at risk.

“This reckless move by DIRECTV will have an impact on our role as part of the national safety and preparedness fabric of our country at a time when the volatility and frequency of weather events seems to be increasing. The Weather Channel partners with humanitarian and emergency management agencies at the local, state and federal levels. We help people prepare before storms, stay safe during their effects, and find help afterward. If the network is not available to viewers, the effectiveness of these partnerships, which help make us a more weather ready nation, are jeopardized. I am hopeful DIRECTV will come to their senses soon and will not force its customers to change carriers to stay safe and informed.”

The poor NWS TBW facebook page posted a nice informative post about the chaff. Sadly though, when I last checked earlier it was getting swarmed with comments of people buying into internet conspiracies, people were freaking out on the post about weather modification, geoengineering, and even a vast conspiracy to poison people.

Some people were even literally mad at the NWS and saying they are in on the conspiracy.

Actually, I think the admins changed it a bit. The topic can either be the blog post, or whatever the blog is currently discussing. So, the range of off-topic posts can ebb and flow. If Dr. Masters writes about how beautiful his floor is, but the blog is talking about flowers, then the current topic can be either. I would have to do work to go find the exact post clarifying the off-topic rules...
Otherwise, you'd have to warn the entire community..and that would be no fun. Which is what some want, but hey.

Tropical Cyclone Advisory #20
TEMPETE TROPICALE MODEREE COLIN (06-20132014)
10:00 AM RET January 14 2014
=========================================

At 6:00 AM UTC, Moderate Tropical Storm Colin (990 hPa) 26.6S 73.2E has 10 minute sustained winds of 45 knots with gusts of 65 knots. The cyclone is reported as moving south at 8 knots.

Gale Force Winds
=================
50 NM radius from the center, extending up to 70 NM in the southwestern quadrant and up to 90 NM in the eastern semi-circle

Near Gale Force Winds
=====================
120 NM radius from the center, extending up to 140 NM in the southern semi-circle and the northeastern quadrant

Dvorak Intensity: T2.0/3.0/W1.5/24 HRS

Forecast and Intensity
=======================
12 HRS 28.8S 73.2E - Depression Post-Tropicale
24 HRS 31.3S 75.8E - Depression Post-Tropicale
48 HRS 37.8S 88.9E - Depression Extratropicale
72 HRS 42.4S 103.8E - Depression Extratropicale

Additional Information
==============================

Dvorak analysis becomes questionable for this system. Colin shows as shear pattern with the residual thunderstorm activity mainly located far away within the southeastern quadrant under the effect of a rising west northwesterly constraint. The low level vortex remains well-defined. 0342z ASCAT swath suggests that it is likely that strong gale force winds exist within the eastern semi-circle of the system.

Little change in the forecast philosophy: the extra-tropical process should start at the end of the day (post-tropical phasis) and be completed on Thursday late. Colin is sailing around the mid-levels ridge existing in its east (refer to numerical weather prediction wind fields from 400 HPA down to 850 HPA). It is expected to slow down today before initiating a southeastward accelerating track on and after Wednesday.
Oh, the fibers are long, I was imagining something much finer than this.
Tropical Cyclone Warning Center Wellington
DEVELOPED LOW, FORMER TC IAN

================================================= =

At 6:00 AM UTC, Low, Former TC Ian (998 hPa) located at 32.0S 167.0W. The low is reported as moving southeast at 15 knots.
At 3:30 PM CST, Tropical Low (993 hPa) located at 13.0S 131.8E or 120 km east southeast of Darwin and 485 km northeast of Wyndham has 10 minute sustained winds of 25 knots with gusts of 45 knots. The low is reported as moving south southwest at 7 knots.

The low is currently over the northwest Top End and is expected to move in a southwest direction, close to the coast near the Northern Territory/Western Australia Border. If the low takes a more westerly track and moves into the Timor Sea, then there is a possibility of a tropical cyclone developing on Wednesday.

GALES with gusts to 95 km/h may develop between Daly River Mouth and Kalumburu during Wednesday.

The Territory Controller advises residents in the Northern Territory from Daly River Mouth to the Western Australia border that now is the time to make final preparations to your home shelter or identify which public emergency shelter to use.

The model for the Weather Channel is for viewers to have info when they want it. For most folks, that is about 10 minutes and then it is time to change the channel.

Effects of Global Warming on Wildlife

If the coyotes, native to North American prairie grasslands, and tigers, native to the sundarbans of southeast Asia, are encroaching on human settlements today, it is only because of loss of habitat and severe shortage of food that they are facing as a result of change in global temperature.

This time of year I have to endure far too many people spout absolute rubbish about the flu vaccines that, after a while, it makes me wonder how the human race will survive between thinking that flu shots make you sick and the loons going on about how climate change is a made-up political agenda.

I see we're resorting to grade school tactics. Nice. I've been a reporting weather station for a number of years and I don't often feel the need to comment, but the level of sheer ignorance about the flu vaccine was too much to ignore (I'm not a weather person, but I am in the medical field). This time of year I have to endure far too many people spout absolute rubbish about the flu vaccines that, after a while, it makes me wonder how the human race will survive between thinking that flu shots make you sick and the loons going on about how climate change is a made-up political agenda.

I was hoping to find info about the trough heading towards NE and the potential for snow FRI/SAT but I'll start looking elsewhere.

The N.E. is going to get several significant troughs for the next two weeks.
This one at 102 hours.

Another at 132 hours.

I think there has been a definite increase in attacks and biting. But not by dogs...
:)

Yeah lets just say I don't have a ferral cat problem where I live. I live near a state park so it's not uncommon to see coyotes roaming around in the early morning hours.

Hmmm... Everythings bigger in Texas, California is big too. I bet Georgia leads in pro rata dog bite deaths though. Bulldogs are the mascot for the state's namesake school...

If you take a CA or TX sized area and overlay it anywhere else on the map the numbers seem similar (east of the Rockies). Georgia is a definite outlier.

Very true. I heard one Met describe it like " small spokes on a wheel " the wheel being the polar vortex. Something did grab my attention tho. Look at the set up over the Arctic at 192 hours. It shows what appears to be a secondary jet coming out of the Arctic into Canada the the U.S.
It'll be to warm for snow tomorrow. If it is going to snow it better do so after 12 am and before 7 am so whatever falls could potentially stick on grassy areas.
FINALLY

We could get up to 7 inches today.

I am so happy!

well it was a good jan thaw
got rid of all the snow with just some ice left
so we are ready for the second half now
hope its not as bad as the first half
but I am sure we will get 1 or 2 strong systems yet before we are done
feb is normally the worst month for winter weather and cold

They were about to.I got a warning in my e-mail.I wish this rain that had fallen this morning could have been snow like what your getting. The southern Jet has stayed active despite it not being a el nino year.We just have the cold at the wrong time..when it's dry.

I was thinking the eastern third of the U.S. and Canada will either see one very large and historic winter storm( Edit, with a bunch of little ones ), or 4 to 5 fairly strong events. With the pattern highly amplified, it is hard to make a confident forecast. This helps a bit. Notice it goes more negative than our last Arctic blast..

Same one as yesterday, eh?

Anyways...

Does anyone know if TWC did in fact get removed last night from DIRECTV, or did they come up with some agreement?

They're cool and so is yours. I think I'm going to try to find a hurricane one of my own.
.
That is really impressive about Raleigh's wind gust. To the posters asking about past hurricane landfalls that may have generated higher wind gusts, I believe Hurricane Hazel generated a gust to 98 mph in Raleigh. I am not sure if it was at the airport location though. The east side of the Triangle had winds that gusted even higher, reported to be between 105-115 mph. Since the airport is on the west side of the metro, the 98 mph reading seems quite plausible.
