May Days

By: JanesVacation , 10:59 PM GMT on May 07, 2014

May is well underway and spring is slowly coming here. Tomorrow is forecast to be the warmest day of 2014 (so far) and the warmest it has been since September of 2013. Right now I am sitting in a fleece jacket and long pants - hard to believe it will be warm tomorrow. Summer forecast is for temperatures colder than normal. We will all just have to wait and see.

School is out in less than 5 weeks. Today marked the end of my final teacher evaluation for this year. The evaluator said she would be seeing me "next year", guess that means I have a teaching job! Looking forward to summer break and whether it is warm or chilly, it will be amazing to have the time off to work in the garden and enjoy my friends and family!

So - one more week for you? Is Friday the 6th your last day?  We have 2 more weeks. I have 7 more days.  I'm getting recognized tomorrow (not just me, but lots of folks) for 25 years in the district. Our district recognizes 5-10-15-20-25 and any increment of 5 years to employees in a ceremony at the end of the year. It's actually going to be part of our staff meeting.

My grandsons have lots of different things happening this year that I get to attend. Last week we went to Ian's class play (put on right in the classroom). It was pretty darn cute. Called Jackie and the Beanstalk.

This Friday is "Special Persons Day". The entire school population does a show and invites "special people" to attend. That includes parents, grandparents, volunteers, anyone they want. I'll be able to go because it's on a Friday and I have Friday off!  Then the following Monday will be Evan's classroom play. I'm so glad I get to go to that too! So often they are on days I work and I don't get the opportunity. Matter of fact, this year, our school held Open House on a different day than all the other elementary schools. My campus houses ALL the special ed classes for the district, so they opted to hold our Open House on a different day for families that had students at our school, and perhaps another elementary school. So, for the first time since they began elementary, I got to go to their Open House!

This upcoming week is Teacher Appreciate Week (TAW) at our school. It's suppose to align with Teacher Appreciate Week nationwide, but our school always chooses a different week. There is something special going on every day at school. Our parents are wonderfully supportive and spoil us rotten. I'm a very fortunate teacher!

Our weather has been exceptional. I'm usually whining big time right about now with our marine layer. We've had some, but it's been burning off about 9-10AM. Then the temps have been perfect.....mid 70s. My ideal. I sure hope I didn't jinx our weather!

So, are you still cold? Or did you warm up a bit. Our weather has been nice, but normal, not NEARLY as hot as it was a couple of weeks ago. That was unbearable!!!

Hi Jane! Nearly summer for you, vacation wise! I'm sure you are excited. It is nice you have warmed up and have left winter behind. We have had a pretty nice spring overall - at least more sunshine and I think warmer than often, although we have had record rain months too. This holiday weekend was so-so, but typical. Too cool and too many clouds for thoughts of doing much outside, which we did not plan to do anyway, so I guess it did not matter to us. It didn't seem very "holiday-ish" for us.

Have you planted your zinnias? I have some sprouts coming up. However one pot of them I think needs replanting as only a few out have come up.

Hope you end the school year well and catch the enthusiasm of the kids!

Our holiday weekend is ending on a warm note. A little thunder in the distance, but no rain. The flowers are enjoying the sunshine and warm temperature. I'm sitting here thinking about 2 weeks of school ahead. It will fly by and the children will be thinking about summertime fun.

Looks like my job is secure for next year, too.

That's great, so you can relax and recharge the batteries over the long summer break.... :)

My parents are about an hour and half away, I'm resolving to go and see them more often while they continue to do well in their home.

Yes, do make time to visit them..... I was only 3 hours away from my parents, but never visited enough.

Happy last few days of School... the kids will be excited this next week!!

It's nice to see that "old" and new friends are still stopping by while I'm away! The weather has turned sunny but it is still chilly. (It COULDNT snow forever.) A few isolated warm days give us hope that it will come. The 90 day outlook is for below normal temperatures. It is not a surprise. But, since I am not a farmer, I'm trying to not let it bother me too much. Although our wine grape vines got nipped by the frost.

Today it is sunny. I have planted my flowers. I bought all good sized plants this year. The outlook for seeds is not good. Geraniums will withstand the cold, not sure about my pink petunias. Still time to replant if they aren't thriving. Everything portable gets bought in at night...just in case. Karen needs to send the heat our way. As long as the west coast stays in their hot pattern. We will stay in our cool one. That is just the way the weather currents work.

7 more days of school for me. It ends June 6. The year went by fast. Looks like my job is secure for next year, too. I'm excited for summer. My parents are about an hour and half away, I'm resolving to go and see them more often while they continue to do well in their home.

Hi Jane!

So you only have a few more days! Me too, but school doesn't get out until June 12th. I have 13 more working days left. Unfortunately I am loosing an aide next year, but in some ways I'm kind of glad. She hasn't progressed well over the last couple of years and seems to have too many family issues that make her miss work. I find that when she is not there I do better. Trying to rely on a person and then not have them show up is quite frustrating. I wish her well. Our media center will be 'dark' on Monday and Friday next year. That means no employee there to assist anybody with anything. It's how a couple other media centers in our district are run.

We also applied and received a California Distinguished School award. There was a lot of prep work for that.

Our school did the SBAC testing. Is Michigan a part of the Common Core? Did your school do the testing? It was optional but our district wanted our students to have the exposure. Basically we 'tested' the test. It went OK, I'd have to say, although it played havoc with my schedule because we had to get every 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classroom in for 3-4 1.5 hour sessions. Glad that's done!

We've had unusually HOT weather, and I'm not crazy about it. Today it only got into the mid 80s, but it felt wonderful. That's because we hit a couple high days of over 100. Here, at the beach! It was quite uncomfortable because we have no AC. The temps inside our house were over 90 and that's just downright unbearable!

Hope you warm up soon, and I hope we cool down more!

Saw you over on another blog and only a few days of school left for you. Hope you have a great summer and soak in all of the warmth and beauty to last you through next winter. It has been a rough winter that is slow to let go. Just thought I would pop over with good wishes for you.

FROST advisories up for tonight. I can't believe that this winter will not give up. The winds are up, but they are predicted to relax and then the cold is allowed to settle upon us. I'm going to bundle up and head out with some plastic sheets to lay over the tender hydrangea leaves that are just making an appearance.

My Montreal, Canada daughter is at the garden center buying flowers and herbs this afternoon! I never expect any location in Canada to be warmer than I am this time of year! Good for her anyway...she seems to have inherited my love for gardening. Her balcony is small on her apartment, but she has several window boxes filled with colorful blooms.

Jus, I'm so happy you visited us here for the annual festival. The tulips were lovely and they continue to be lovely this week. Tulips enjoy the cold, so it really has been perfect. Did you see one of the parades? There are three - Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. The Saturday one is the longest and most popular. The local school children all dress up in "Dutch costumes" and parade down the Main Street on Thursday. The weather cooperated for most of the festivities.

I'm coming to visit tomorrow :) Holland, that is. We're doing a short day trip to see the tulips. I'll wave when we get there, lol. Hope the rain holds off until late.

Take care!
