A bit late on this but I have been quite busy with some things. This past Winter was very exciting and to a certain extent, tiring. Many people here in York, Pennsylvania were quite over with Winter by February. Here is just a quick recap of Winter in my area:::::::
Total Accumulation: About 72"
Snowiest Month: February (33")
Estimated Days with snowfall: Around 30
Strongest Storm: Winter Storm Pax, 21" (February 13th)
Winter started off somewhat early with our first trace of snowfall occurring November 27th. Afterwards we had a short break but started December with a decent 6" snowfall. The rest of December we got around 10" of snow including a trace of snow Christmas Eve. We rang in 2014 with another 6" snowstorm on January 2nd/3rd. By now people were starting to complain. Also I should mention, during January there were several cold outbreaks that sent us way below average. The lowest temperature at my house was around -20 with a windchill of -29. There were several times the windchill dipped below -10. We had another break for the "January Thaw" which seems to happen every year but then 'Winter Storm Janus' kicked us back into Winter with 10" of snow January 21st. The rest of the month was rather uneventful. February was predicted to be the snowiest month, with good reason. Many times February is the snowiest month of the year. Just like January, February started with a bang on Feb 3rd with 9" of snow from 'Winter Storm Maximus'. Then, February really threw us for a loop. On the 5th, 'Winter Storm Nika' gave my area up to a half inch of ice. Schools were closed for 2 days and power was out in many places for days. Some people even lost power for more then a week. That storm was also deadly for trees. Tons of trees were down everywhere including 4 large trees right around my house. The sound of the trees coming down left and right was quite nerve racking. My house did not receive any damage but some friends of mine had trees down on their houses. The 13th, we got slammed again by 'Winter Storm Pax'. I received around 21" of snow and areas around me may have locally gotten more then two feet of snow. This storm reminded many of the 2010 Winter Storms which slammed the area and got nicknames like 'Snowmageddon' or 'snowpacolypse'. The rest of the month, thankfully, we had a break form heavy snowfall but the cold was still very much in place. March had 3 measureable snows with the highest being 'Winter Storm Wiley' on the 26/17th with 2.25" of snow. In April it had begun to warm but not before surprising people with another trace of snow on April 15th. There were also numerous frosts in the beginning of the month which has delayed many from planting flowers.
This may not be very in depth, but this is just a quick overview of this past Winter. I surely won't forget this Winter anytime soon because of the sheer cold and total amount of snow seen. I feel really sorry for all the kids in my area that are going to school an extra week or two in June. I am actually happy Winter is over and please, Mother Nature, bring on 70's and sun. The wait is on for next Winter :)
