This is my newest blog and you can find it at an app I highly recommend-- Weather Underground (Wunder)!
I started this blog, in all honesty, to exploit my weather hobbey..
I'm a sixth grade reading teacher and I love it because I'm a 'wordy.' I love the English language and the artistic masterpieces written simply by finding the right combination and phrasing of words...play on words and puns are my favorite.
The main reason I chose reading over the field of science is that there is a HUGE correlation or gap in America's educational deficit and the learners ability to read and comprehend...
With 6th grade ELAR being a tested subject area, there's a lot of stress involved, but I try to find ways to really connect with my kids, and I find that sharing my passions with them and helping them explore/discover there's in literature is the first step...
Let me share with you our current unit and exploitation of my passion:
Last week we started a two week (give or take a few days) unit about how to prepare and educate people in the event of severe weather, and also commemorate the upcoming anniversary of the May 11th 1970 Lubbock tornado.
Supplementally, my students will compare and contrast our local severe drought to that of the 1930's--better referred to as the Dust Bowl...
Their end product is a brochure that spreads awareness of the importance of preparedness and illustrates our climate compared to the Dust Bowl. They will share with their local community as well as two local weather news stations :)
My end goal--with the help of community partners (weather chief meteorologist for a local broadcasting station and also a certified storm chaser from the NWS (National Weather Service) of Lubbock-- is to educate my kids of the importance of severe weather season and secondly to keep engagement high which can be a challenge this close to Summer Break...
I hope you choose to follow my weather related blog entries... I'll be sharing updates of my classes and environmental photos I take in my spare time.
