Watches & Warnings

Areal Flood Warning
Issued: 9:41 AM MST Feb. 22, 2017 – National Weather Service

... A Flood Warning for an ice jam remains in effect until 130 PM MST
for central Big Horn County...

At 923 am MST, emergency management in Greybull reported that there
were open channels of flowing water on both sides of the Big Horn
river. There is also flowing water on top of the ice upstream of
the Highway bridge. Emergency management also reported that the
Main Channel is open with flowing water along the Big Horn river at
basin. Ice jams are occurring downstream between basin and Greybull.

The stage at the Big Horn river at Greybull at 7 am this morning was
90.5 feet. The river is expected to fluctuate around 90.5 feet
through Thursday morning. Flood stage at the Big Horn river is at
92.0 feet.

Cooler temperatures are expected by Thursday and Friday which should
slow down ice jam flooding along the Big Horn river from downstream
of basin to Greybull.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

River ice is very unpredictable, and may move and jam with little
notice. Any ice jam can cause flooding, as the ice dams the river,
causing rapid increases in river levels in a short period of time.
People living near the Big Horn river should monitor the situation
closely and be ready to move to higher ground if flooding occurs.
