Watches & Warnings

Areal Flood Warning
Issued: 8:50 AM MST Feb. 23, 2017 – National Weather Service

... A Flood Warning for an ice jam remains in effect until 130 PM MST
for central Big Horn County...

At 826 am MST, Greybull emergency management reported minor flooding
was occurring along the right bank of the Big Horn river near the
lagoons and along the opposite bank of the water treatment plant.
The peak of the flooding occurred Wednesday night when the depth of
the flood waters was 2 to 3 feet. The flood waters were not
affecting any property along the right bank of the river. The river
has receded considerably this morning with minor flooding still
occurring at the north end of Greybull.

The stage at the Big Horn river at Greybull was 87.9 feet at 7 am
this morning. Flood stage is 92.0 feet. The river is expected to
fluctuate between 89.0 and 90.0 feet through Thursday evening.

Continued much colder temperatures in the next 2 to 3 days will
drastically reduce the amount of ice jams along the Big Horn river
Friday through Sunday.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

River ice is very unpredictable, and may move and jam with little
notice. Any ice jam can cause flooding, as the ice dams the river,
causing rapid increases in river levels in a short period of time.
People living near the Big Horn river should monitor the situation
closely and be ready to move to higher ground if flooding occurs.
