Areal Flood Warning
Issued: 5:20 PM MDT May. 21, 2019 – National Weather Service

... A Flood Warning remains in effect until 200 PM MDT Sunday for
southeastern Meade... eastern Custer and southeastern Pennington
counties...

Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicate an area of very
heavy rainfall across the warned area. This heavy rain will cause
overland flooding and flooding of small creeks and streams.

Some locations that will experience flooding include...
eastern portions of Rapid City along rapid creek; the Rapid Valley
area along rapid creek; areas around Box Elder and New Underwood
along Box Elder creek downstream to owanka; Elk Creek north of Rapid
City, Box Elder and New Underwood to downstream of Elm springs;
Battle Creek east of hermosa; Beaver Creek upstream and downstream
of Buffalo gap; French Creek around fairburn; Spring Creek from the
Hart ranch area to south of folsom; and all the other smaller
drainages into the Cheyenne river east of Rapid City.

Additional rainfall amounts over an inch are possible in the warned
area.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

... Flood Watch remains in effect through Friday afternoon...

The Flood Watch continues for

* portions of northwestern South Dakota and southwestern South
Dakota.

* Through Friday afternoon.

* Recent heavy rain and snow with saturated grounds will continue
to lead to ongoing flooding concerns the next few days. Expect
rivers, creeks, and streams to rise the next few days,
potentially flowing out of their banks. Flooding of low lying
areas is also possible.


Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flood Watch means that flooding is possible along rivers and
creeks in the watch area, but is not imminent. If you are in the
watch area, take time to move livestock, equipment, and other
property from low lying areas before flooding occurs. Monitor
NOAA Weather Radio and local media for updated forecasts and be
ready to quickly move to higher ground if rising water levels are
observed or a warning is issued.
