... The Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 915 PM EDT for
northeastern Avery County...

At 707 PM EDT... Doppler radar and spotters report 3 to 4 inches of
rainfall across Banner Elk and surrounding areas over the past two
hours. Although rainfall rates have recently started to taper
off... additional showers moving slowly over the warned area will
produce local half inch per hour rainfall rates through 8 PM.

Avery County reports street flooding ongoing around Banner Elk
primarily due to drainage issues associated with the heavy rainfall.
Additional locations that may experience flooding include... Elk Park
as well as low lying areas around Beech Mountain... Sugar Mountain
and Seven Devils. Stream flooding remains possible along Hanging
Rock creek east of Banner Elk.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Do not attempt to cross
water-covered roadways... bridges... or low-level crossings. Only a few
inches of rapidly flowing water can carry away your vehicle. It is
not Worth the risk. Please turn around... don't drown.

When it is safe to do so... please report flood waters or landslides
flowing over roads or threatening property to the National Weather

Areal Flood Advisory
Issued: 5:49 PM EDT Jul. 27, 2016 – National Weather Service

The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a

* Flood Advisory for...
northeastern Avery County in western North Carolina...

* until 745 PM EDT

* at 544 PM EDT... Doppler radar indicated heavy rainfall due to a
series of redeveloping thunderstorms over and near the Banner Elk
area. These thunderstorms are drifting slowly east but continue to
redevelop to the west of Banner Elk. Radar indicates that 1 to 2
inches of rain have fallen in the past hour... and rainfall at
rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour could continue until 7 PM. This
will cause minor flooding to develop in low lying parts of
the advisory area.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Banner Elk... Elk Park... Beech Mountain in Avery County...
Sugar Mountain... Seven Devils...
Grandfather Mountain and Grandfather Mountain State Park. Flooding
may also develop along or near Hanging Rock creek east of Banner
Elk.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are
potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded
roads. Turn around... dont drown.

miles west of Newland... or 5 miles northeast of Bakersville... moving
east at 20 mph.

Locations to be impacted include... Newland... Banner Elk... Elk
Park... Beech Mountain in Avery County... Crossnore... Sugar
Mountain... Seven Devils... Grandfather Mountain State
Park... Grandfather Mountain and b.R. Parkway-Linville Falls to
Grandfather.

Half inch hail... wind gusts up to 40 mph and very heavy rainfall
rates up to 2 inches per hour will be possible in these areas.

Torrential rainfall may flood areas with poor drainage... such as
