... November 2016 and autumn seasonal weather summary for north
central and southwest Montana...

A broad ridge of high pressure aloft dominated the weather for
Montana during November. Above normal temperatures prevailed for
almost the entire month. There were only a couple of days during the
month that experienced below normal averages. The only precipitation
during November was during a mid-month weather system that affected
most of the state, and another at the end of the month when a system
dropped snow over much of southeastern Montana.

Overall... temperatures averaged above normal across the region.
Temperature departures from average ranged from 5.3f above normal at
West Yellowstone to 12.1f above normal at Simpson. The warmest
periods were early in the month. A 78f high temperature was recorded
at Loma on the 9th. The lowest monthly temperature was -13f at West
Yellowstone, on the 18th. This was the warmest coldest November
temperature since 2008. Temperature averages ranged from 45.9f at
Great Falls city, to 28.9f at yellow mule.
This was the warmest November since 1954 at Cut Bank, Great Falls
and Havre, and was the warmest of record at Helena. This exceeded
helena's old record warmest November set in 1904.

All locations ranked among their top 10 warmest novembers of record.
For the fall season /September through November/, this was the third
warmest at Helena and 5th warmest at Dillon. Again, all areas were
above normal.

Precipitation amounts were on the lighter side of normal. Havre
recorded only a trace and Helena received only 0.02". These were
their second driest novembers of record. The wettest area location
was many Glacier, with 4.30". Nearby St Mary measured 1.82" for the
month. Lewistown (0.06") was driest since 1904 and Helena since 1928.

With heavy precipitation most areas in September and October, the
lack of precipitation did not affect the high wetness ranking of the
fall season much. West Yellowstone recorded their wettest such
season, while Dillon saw their second wettest. At Lewistown, it was
their wettest fall since 1946 and at Havre it was their wettest
since 1986.

With light precipitation, snowfall was also below normal most areas.
Cut Bank did record 6-inches, one-inch above normal. At Dillon, this
was their lightest monthly November snowfall since 1918.
Seasonal snowfall is equally light at most locations. Dillon has
seen their smallest seasonal snowfall total of record. At Great
Falls, its the lowest amount (2.7") since 1962, while at Helena its
their lowest since 2004.

In general, winds were lower than normal in November. At Airport
locations, Great Falls had the strongest monthly average at 12.9 mph.
The highest average at higher elevations was 21.8 mph at Deep Creek
RAWS, in Glacier County (1.7 mph below normal). Norris Hill recorded
an average of 16.1 mph. The highest November gust was 76 mph near
east Glacier, on the 14th. Light winds during the month produced a
tie for the calmest November of record at Dillon. The area average
was the lowest since 1982.
