Flood Warning, Areal Flood Warning
Issued: 2:50 PM CDT May. 22, 2019 – National Weather Service

The Flood Warning continues for
the Ninnescah River near Belle Plaine.
* Until Friday morning.
* At 2:00 PM Wednesday the stage was 26.3 feet.
* Flood stage is 23.0 feet.
* Major flooding is occurring and major flooding is forecast.
* Impact... at 26.0 feet... a section of k55 floods with 2 feet of water
starting from 300 feet east of the River Bridge and expanding out
to 25 feet wide. Expect flood waters on Highway 81 to expand
further south to the y intersection of k55. The small community of
Ponderosa Estates, 5 miles northwest of Belle Plaine, will have a
few homes flooded and roads leading into the estates flooded.
Timber brook estates will have roads inundated by over a foot of
water.

The Flood Warning continues for
the Ninnescah River near Peck.
* Until late Thursday night.
* At 2:30 PM Wednesday the stage was 19.8 feet.
* Flood stage is 17.0 feet.
* Minor flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast.
* Forecast... the river will continue to fall to below flood stage by
early Thursday afternoon.
* Impact... at 18.0 feet... water flows over 103rd street about 2 miles
west of Clearwater. Flooding is about 2 feet deep in that area.
South of Clearwater the river expands to about 1/2 mile on the
South Bank. Expect many County roads near the river to be flooded.

The Flood Warning continues for
the Chikaskia river near Corbin.
* Until Thursday evening.
* At 2:01 PM Wednesday the stage was 14.2 feet.
* Flood stage is 10.0 feet.
* Minor flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast.
* Forecast... the river will continue to fall to below flood stage by
late Thursday morning.
* Impact... at 13.0 feet... left bank overflows extend out to about 100
yards. A low water bridge on south Sumner Road, 3 miles downstream
from gage site or 2 miles southwest of Corbin, floods.

the Arkansas River at Oxford.
* Until further notice.
* At 2:05 PM Wednesday the stage was 20.6 feet.
* Flood stage is 17.0 feet.
* Moderate flooding is occurring and moderate flooding is forecast.
* Forecast... the river will continue rising to near 21.5 feet by
Thursday morning then begin falling.
* Impact... at 22.5 feet... flood waters cover Wea street leading east
into the low lying areas of the flood plain.

The Flood Warning continues for
the Arkansas River near Mulvane.
* Until Saturday evening.
* At 1:15 PM Wednesday the stage was 20.0 feet.
* Flood stage is 16.5 feet.
* Moderate flooding is occurring and moderate flooding is forecast.
* Forecast... the river will continue rising to near 20.1 feet by this
evening. The river will fall below flood stage Saturday morning.
* Impact... at 20.5 feet... flood waters may begin to impact Highway 53,
about 1000 ft west of the River Bridge gage site.

* At 1048 am CDT, local law enforcement reported flooding in many
counties of south central and southeast Kansas. Numerous roadways
remain closed. Continue to obey Road closures and do not attempt
to forge flood waters. This warning replaces fa.W 57.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Wichita, Hutchinson, Derby, Newton, El Dorado, Arkansas City,
Winfield, Andover, Haysville, Parsons, Coffeyville, Independence,
Augusta, Chanute, Wellington, Park city, Valley Center, Bel Aire,
Mulvane and Iola.

This includes the following highways...
Interstate 135 between mile markers 0 and 42.
Interstate 35 between mile markers 1 and 115.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as
well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.

Please report flooding to your local law enforcement agency when you
can do so safely.

A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring. All
interested parties should take necessary precautions immediately.
