Areal Flood Advisory, Flash Flood Watch
Issued: 7:05 AM HST Jul. 23, 2016 – National Weather Service

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a

* Flood Advisory for...
the island of Maui in Maui County

* until 1000 am HST

* at 656 am HST... radar indicated heavy rain along the windward
slopes of Haleakala and the west Maui mountains. Rain was falling
at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour. Stream gages have been also
indicating rising water levels. This rainfall, associated with
Tropical Storm Darby, is expected to continue through the day.

* Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to...
Kahului... Pukalani... Haliimaile... Honokohau... Pauwela... Wailuku...
Huelo... Keanae... Nahiku...
Hana and all other locations along the Hana Highway.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Stay away from streams... drainage ditches and low lying areas prone
to flooding.

Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due
to ponding... reduced visibility and poor braking action.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle... or on
foot. Turn around... don't drown.

This advisory may need to be extended beyond 1000 am HST if heavy
rain persists.

A Flash Flood Watch is also in effect for Maui County through
Sunday afternoon.

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through Sunday afternoon...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* Kahoolawe... Lanai... Maui... Molokai and The Big Island.

* Through Sunday afternoon

* the center of Tropical Storm Darby is forecast to move over...
or very close to... The Big Island today... and the islands of
Maui County late tonight into Sunday morning. Excessive
rainfall is expected to become widespread on The Big Island
today... and over Maui County this afternoon into tonight.

* In addition to flood prone areas... heavy rain events of this
size may cause flooding in areas outside designated flood
zones. Storm total rainfall amounts are forecast to be between
10 and 15 inches... with locally higher amounts possible. Low
spots in roads can become dangerous and impassable due to
severe runoff. High amounts of debris in streams and gulches
may clog bridges and culverts resulting in dangerous flooding
which could occur outside the normal channels... and could also
lead to significant property damage.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is very dangerous.

You should monitor later forecasts and get prepared for flash
flooding this weekend. Never drive into areas where water covers
the Road. Turn around... Don/T drown.

leading to flash flooding. People near streams... rivers... and low-

flooding.

Based on the latest forecast track... tropical storm force winds
over 39 mph are expected to begin overspreading the area Saturday

will be knocked down resulting in scattered power outages. Some
large branches of healthy trees will be snapped. Most newly
planted trees and shrubs will be damaged or uprooted.

Poorly constructed homes may sustain minor wall damage and
partial roof removal. Other homes may have minor roof and siding
damage.

... Inland flooding...
rain from Darby is expected to reach Maui later today... becoming
heavy at times with heavier squalls and embedded thunderstorms.
Heavy rain at times will then continue tonight and Sunday. Storm
total rainfall amounts of 10 to 15 inches could lead to
significant flash flooding. Refer to the Flash Flood Watch for
more details.

... Storm surge and storm tide...
for east facing shores of Maui... surf heights of 15 to 25 feet
are expected. This may cause significant wave runup and damage on
some windward coastal roads. Refer to the high surf warning for
more details.

For east facing shores of Molokai... surf heights of 10 to 14 feet are
expected. Refer to the high surf advisory for more details.
