Watches & Warnings

High Surf Warning
Issued: 3:42 AM HST Jan. 18, 2017 – National Weather Service

... High surf warning remains in effect from noon today to 6 am
HST Thursday...

* surf... along north and west facing shores of Niihau... Kauai and
Molokai... and north facing shores of Oahu and Maui... 20 to 25
feet.

* Timing... rising to warning levels on Kauai around noon... on Oahu
during the afternoon... and across Maui County during the
evening.

* Impacts... high... expect ocean water occasionally sweeping
across portions of beaches... very strong breaking waves and
strong longshore and rip currents. Breaking waves may
occasionally impact harbors making navigating The Harbor
channel dangerous.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Large breaking surf... significant shorebreak... and dangerous
currents make entering the water very hazardous. Anyone entering
the water could face significant injury or death. Boaters should
be aware of an increased number of surfers utilizing The Harbor
channel to access surfing areas.

Special Statement
Issued: 9:41 AM HST Jan. 18, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Very windy weekend ahead...

A strong high pressure system will pass north of the islands
this weekend... bringing very windy conditions to all islands
Saturday and Sunday. The strong northeast to east winds will be
especially gusty over higher terrain... through mountain gaps... and
downslope of the mountains. These winds can make loose outdoor
objects become airborne... and result in hazardous driving
conditions due to strong cross winds.

If you have outdoor plans for the weekend... be prepared for very
windy conditions. If your plans involve marine activities... you
may want to consider postponing them.

Stay tuned to the National Weather Service or your favorite media
outlet for further updates on the forecast.
