Coastal Hazard Statement
Issued: 3:28 AM EDT Aug. 30, 2016 – National Weather Service

... High rip current risk in effect through this evening...

The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued a high rip
current risk... which is in effect through this evening.

* Timing... the threat for dangerous rip currents will be in place
all day, however, it will be highest between 930 am and 4 PM due
to tidal effects.

* Impacts... a 13 to 14 second long period easterly swell,
generated by distant major Hurricane Gaston in the central
Atlantic, will continue to pile up water behind The Sand Bar
today. This will result in numerous strong rip currents in the
surf zone. The seaward pull of a rip current can be life
threatening. Only swim in the ocean near a lifeguard.

In addition to strong rip currents... strong longshore currents
will also be possible today. A southeast wind of around 15 mph
will result in a northward flowing current along the beaches.
If you find yourself moving northward along the coast into deep
water, remain calm and do not swim directly back against the
current. Signal for help and try to swim at an angle to the
current and back to shore. Avoid swimming near piers and
jetties where seaward flowing rip currents are strong.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore... which occur most often at low spots or breaks in The
Sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as jetties and
piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards... beach patrol flags and
signs.

Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current remain calm.
Don't fight the current. Swim in a direction following the
shoreline. If unable to escape... face the shore and call or wave
for help. If tired, float or tread water until out of the rip
current.
