Watches & Warnings

Areal Flood Advisory, Flash Flood Watch, High Surf Advisory
Issued: 11:14 PM PST Jan. 22, 2017 – National Weather Service

The National Weather Service in Oxnard has issued a

* Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory for...
northeastern Los Angeles County in southwestern California...

* until 115 am PST

* at 1108 PM PST, National Weather Service Doppler radar and
automated rain gauges indicated a line of heavy showers moving
across the Los Angeles basin late this evening. Rainfall rates
with this band of showers are generally between one half and three
quarters of an inch per hour, which will be heavy enough to
produce urban flooding.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Long Beach... Whittier... Pasadena... Culver City...
downtown Los Angeles... Inglewood... San Dimas... Glendora...
Beverly Hills... West Covina and the sand... fish...
and Reservoir burn areas.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as
well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.

A Flood Advisory means river or stream flows are elevated, or ponding
of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent.

811 PM PST sun Jan 22 2017

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through Monday afternoon...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* Los Angeles and Ventura counties in southwest California.

* Through 6 PM Monday.

* Periods of heavy rain with peak rainfall rates of 0.50 to 1.00
inches per hour are possible. This could generate flash
flooding and or mud and debris flows... especially in and
around recent burn areas.

* Landslides and Rockslides are very common during intense rain
events and could lead to Road closures.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Flash flooding and debris flows will be a particular threat in
and below the recently burned areas.

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

People in or below the recently burned areas are urged to take
the steps necessary to protect their property. Remain alert and
follow directions of emergency preparedness officials.

... High surf advisory remains in effect until 6 PM PST Tuesday...

* surf... surf of 7 to 12 feet. Highest on west facing beaches.

* Impacts... large waves and strong rip currents will increase
the risk of ocean drowning. Breaking waves can cause injury...
wash people off beaches or rocks and capsize small boats
nearshore. Moderate beach erosion is expected.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Remember... swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current
remain calm. Don't fight the current. Swim in a direction
following the shoreline. When out of the current... swim back to
shore. If tired... float or tread water until out of the rip
current. If unable to escape... face the shore and call or wave
for help.

Wind Advisory
Issued: 7:02 PM PST Jan. 22, 2017 – National Weather Service
