Areal Flood Advisory
Issued: 9:09 AM PST Jan. 20, 2017 – National Weather Service

The National Weather Service in Oxnard has issued a

* Flood Advisory for...
Ventura County in southwestern California including the solimar,
Springs, and Pine burn areas...

* until 300 PM PST Friday

* at 900 am PST, Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated
moderate to heavy rain overspreading Ventura County, with even heavier
rainfall to the west across Santa Barbara County. Rainfall rates between
one quarter and one half inch per hour will be common across Ventura County
this morning, with local rates up to one inch per hour near thunderstorms
and heavier shower bands.

The heavier rain will cause widespread ponding of water on area roadways
and local flooding of low lying areas and intersections as well as
small streams. There will be a significant threat of mud and Rockslides
today, especially near canyon roadways. Minor mud and debris flows
will be possible in the vicinity of the solimar, Springs, and pines
burn areas.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Oxnard... Thousand Oaks... Simi Valley... Ventura... Camarillo... Fillmore...
Ojai... Point Mugu State Park... Newbury Park... as well as the
solimar, Springs, and pines burn areas.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

A Flood Advisory means river or stream flows are elevated, or ponding
of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent.

... Wind Advisory remains in effect until 9 PM PST this evening...

increase to 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph this morning...
become southwest to west at similar speeds this afternoon...
then slowly diminish this evening.

for drivers of high profile vehicles. Since the soils are
wet... there is a heightened potential for downed trees.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Special Statement
Issued: 7:11 AM PST Jan. 20, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Threat of strong thunderstorms with potential for locally
damaging wind gusts... heavy downpours... small hail... and isolated
waterspouts today across southwest California...

A strong upper level jet stream combined with increasing
instability will bring a chance of thunderstorms today across
southwest California... especially this afternoon. The greatest
threat of thunderstorms will be across Ventura and Los Angeles
counties as well as the adjacent coastal waters. Some of these
thunderstorms could be strong... with the main threats being
locally damaging winds that could down trees and power lines as
well as brief heavy downpours causing localized roadway flooding.
In addition... any thunderstorm that develops today will be capable
of producing small hail and dangerous cloud to ground
lightning... including beach areas.

Conditions are also favorable for isolated waterspouts across
the coastal waters... especially south of Ventura. Remember that
waterspouts do have the potential to come ashore as weak tornados
across coastal communities. The threat of strong thunderstorms
is expected to diminish by tonight.
