High Surf Advisory, Flash Flood Watch
Issued: 12:01 AM PST Jan. 23, 2017 – National Weather Service

... High surf advisory remains in effect until 6 PM PST Tuesday...

* surf... surf of 12 to 18 feet... highest on west and northwest-
facing beaches... will likely continue through at least Tuesday.
This advisory may need to be extended Thursday or Friday as the
swell is expected to linger.

* Impacts... there is an increased risk for ocean drowning. Rip
currents can pull swimmer and surfers out to sea. Breaking
waves can cause injury... wash people off beaches or rocks and
capsize small boats nearshore.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Remember... swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current
remain calm. Don't fight the current. Swim in a direction
following the shoreline. When out of the current... swim back to
shore. If tired... float or tread water until out of the rip
current. If unable to escape... face the shore and call or wave
for help.

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through Monday afternoon...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties in southwest
California.

* Through 6 PM Monday.

* Periods of heavy rain with peak rainfall rates of 0.50 to 1.00
inches per hour are possible. This could generate flash
flooding and or mud and debris flows... especially in and
around recent burn areas.

* Landslides and Rockslides are very common during intense rain
events and could lead to Road closures.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Flash flooding and debris flows will be a particular threat in
and below the recently burned areas.

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

People in or below the recently burned areas are urged to take
the steps necessary to protect their property. Remain alert and
follow directions of emergency preparedness officials.
