Watches & Warnings

Areal Flood Advisory
Issued: 5:27 AM PST Jan. 20, 2017 – National Weather Service

The National Weather Service in the San Francisco Bay area has issued
a

* Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory for...
southwestern Santa Clara County in northern California...
Santa Cruz County in northern California...
San Mateo County in northern California...

* until 830 am PST

* at 525 am PST, Doppler radar and automated gauges indicated heavy
rain that will cause Urban and Small Stream flooding in the
advisory area. Even after precipitation ends, Urban and Small
Stream flooding will likely persist due to run-off.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
San Jose, San Mateo, Redwood City, Palo Alto, Santa Cruz,
Cupertino, San Bruno, Pacifica, Menlo Park, Saratoga, Los Gatos,
Burlingame, San Carlos, Belmont, Millbrae, Corralitos, Scotts
Valley, Half Moon Bay, Hillsborough and Capitola.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams, country roads, farmland, urban areas, highways,
streets and underpasses as well as other drainage areas and low
lying spots.

In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are
potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded
roads. Find an alternate Route.

Gale Warning, Small Craft Advisory
Issued: 3:55 AM PST Jan. 20, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Gale Warning remains in effect until 7 am PST this morning...
... Small Craft Advisory remains in effect from 7 am this morning
to 10 PM PST this evening...

* winds: southwesterly winds 20 to 30 kt... gusts to 45 kt in the
morning.

* See the coastal waters forecast (cwfmtr) or our marine Page at
http://weather.Gov/sanfrancisco/marine.Php for more details.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Small Craft Advisory means that wind speeds of 21 to 33 knots
are expected to produce hazardous wave conditions to small craft.
Inexperienced mariners... especially those operating smaller
vessels should avoid navigating in these conditions.

A Gale Warning means winds of 34 to 47 knots are imminent or
occuring. Operating a vessel in gale conditions requires
experience and properly equipped vessels. It is highly
recommended that mariners without the proper experience seek safe
Harbor prior to the onset of gale conditions.
