Beach Hazard Statement
Issued: 5:00 AM PST Jan. 18, 2017 – National Weather Service

... Beach hazards statement in effect from Thursday morning
through late Monday night...

The National Weather Service in San Diego has issued a beach
hazards statement for an extended period of high surf... which is
in effect from Thursday morning through late Monday night.

* Waves and surf... high surf around 7 feet developing
Thursday... then increasing on Friday to 10 to 16 feet. Surf
subsiding on Sunday then increasing again on Monday.

* Impacts... high surf will bring very hazardous swimming
conditions to the beaches Thursday through Monday. High surf can
suddenly wash people off jetties and rocks. In addition... large
and potentially damaging surf will be possible Friday through
Saturday... creating the potential for coastal erosion and
coastal flooding... with possible damage to coastal structures
such as piers. Coastal flooding will be most likely during times
of high tide. Frequent strong rip currents and long-shore
currents are also likely.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A beach hazards statement is issued when threats such as strong
rip currents... elevated surf heights... minor tidal overflow... or
lightning are possible at local beaches. Obey posted warning
signs and flags and talk to a lifeguard before swimming. Use
caution when in or near the water and always swim near a
lifeguard.
