Watches & Warnings

High Surf Advisory
Issued: 3:52 PM PST Jan. 18, 2017 – National Weather Service

... High surf advisory in effect from 4 PM Thursday to 9 PM PST
Tuesday...

The National Weather Service in Los Angeles/Oxnard has issued a
high surf advisory... which is in effect from 4 PM Thursday to
9 PM PST Tuesday. The beach hazards statement has been cancelled.

* Surf... surf of 4 to 8 feet on Thursday may build to 10 to 16
feet by late Friday and Saturday. The surf will diminish Sunday
and Monday but will remain above high surf thresholds.

* Impacts... large and powerful surf with dangerous rip currents
and breaking waves on rocks and jetties. Damage to piers is
possible on Saturday... as well as coastal flooding of beach
parking lots and walkways. Ventura Harbor will have breaking
waves across the entrance.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A high surf advisory means that high surf and rip currents will
make swimming and rock jetties dangerous.

Remember... swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current
remain calm. Don't fight the current. Swim in a direction
following the shoreline. When out of the current, swim back to
shore. If tired, float or tread water until out of the rip
current. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for
help.

... Small Craft Advisory in effect from midnight tonight to 9 am
PST Thursday...
... Gale watch remains in effect from Friday morning through
Saturday afternoon...

The National Weather Service in Los Angeles/Oxnard has issued a
Small Craft Advisory... which is in effect from midnight tonight
to 9 am PST Thursday.

* Winds... southeast to south winds will increase to 15 to 25 kt
with gusts to 30 kt late tonight and early Thursday morning.
Winds will diminish some on Thursday afternoon and Thursday
night then west winds will develop and increase to 15 to 30 kt
with gusts up to 40 kt are possible Friday and Friday night.

* Seas... combined seas will build to 4 to 6 feet late tonight and
early Thursday morning. Seas will continue to build to 14 to 17
feet with periods around 15 seconds by Saturday morning.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A gale watch is issued when hazardous gale force winds of 34 to
47 knots are probable in the near future... but the specific
timing and/or location is still uncertain. It is intended to
provide additional lead time for mariners who may wish to
consider altering their plans.

A Small Craft Advisory means that hazardous sea conditions will
exist for small craft. Inexperienced mariners... especially those
operating smaller vessels should avoid navigating in these
conditions.
