With the colder temperatures, rivers and lakes in southcentral are
freezing up. Some guidance for safe ice thicknesses for different
loads is as follows:
2 inches or less: stay off!
2 inches: safe for one person
3-5 inches: safe for a small group of people
5 inches: safe for a snowmachine
8-12 inches: safe for a car or small pickup
12-15 inches: safe for a medium truck
Remember: water will begin to freeze from the shoreline outward.
Just because ice is a safe thickness near the shore does not mean
it is safe across the entire lake or river.
