Caption: The snake won this battle. It wrapped itself around the reeds and, unable to loosen it, the great blue heron finally gave up.

Thank you everyone. Yes, the snake got away and the heron was uninjured. Once the snake got down into the plants, it was pretty secure. The heron tried for several minutes to pull it out. It was quite a battle but, in the end, the snake disappeared and the heron continued to look for food. I've seen events like this numerous times with both great blue herons and American bittern catching snakes. The Circle B reserve in Lakeland, FL is an amazing place.

Oh my goodness. What a shot. You are a much braver person than I! I would have fled the scene, I am hugely afraid of snakes. The photo reminds me why.

It is an amazing photo, even if it scares the daylights out of me. Zero for the snake, ten for you.

Did the snake kill the heron or just get away? It looks like it is wrapped around his neck!! Yuck. Great capture, but I'm glad it was you and not me!!

About virgo1048

virgo1048

Hello all. My name is Roberta and I live in central Florida. There seems to be a never ending show put on by Mother Nature here and I am privileged to be able to see and document it. I love taking photos of birds but my passion is the ever changing Florida weather. Thanks for checking out my photos.
