I don't know what it is either, Peg; I just know that funguses, rots, molds, and blights of all sorts damage or destroy altogether too many kinds of plants, including those that are economically important as food sources, as well as others that are esthetically pleasing as this oak is, or would be except for the ugly blotches. Several of my fruit trees died this past year, victims of sometimes unknown diseases or circumstances beyond my knowledge. Including two peach trees that were destroyed by brown rot, which usually affects only the fruit, and a pear tree that was lost to fire blight, when it was supposedly resistant to that disease. It's a fallen and imperfect world; only in heaven does this not occur.
