Caption: Trees were plentiful when these areas were being developed, so wood was the obvious choice for a bridge truss...rather than stone, etc. The sides and roof helped preserve the wood structure beneath from the rain, snow, and sun. Secondarily, they gave travelers a brief break from the weather when traveling in secluded areas. Another term for covered bridges is "kissing bridge" because it gave couples privacy to steal a kiss :) By the looks of the graffiti, some bridges still attract couples! LOL
