The pond was solid white this morning but as the day warmed it developed spiders. Eight legs even! :-)

How funny! How odd! I've only seen this where kids (or grown-ups) have thrown rocks into forming ice, never naturally! (maybe I just THINK people threw rocks, maybe it happens more often than we know!)

yes..we have this phenom on our pond all the time..and the reason is as you stated in your narrative..thawing..some resemble spiders while other formations look like bare limbed trees..very nice capture..AC congrats! :)

My thought was there was a leaf or something floating there that was a good absorber of solar energy, and the warmer water was leaching along the surface melting ice at its thinnest points - that doesn't explain the shape very well though. But I'm not going out to look :-)
