There are two types of HDR - Tone Mapping and Fusion. Fusion blends three or more exposures together. I am not sure how to describe Tone Mapping, but it accentuates shadows, and varies them, according to your choice. It is a bit time-consuming to process, but I find it fun for the occasional photo.
