Tok, AK (Current Weather Conditions)

Caption: Aggressive pyrocumulus from the Tetlin Jct Ridge fire created it's own powerful vortex, ripping out 30 foot trees on fire, and then flung them high into the air. When this pyrocumulus collapsed after a few hours, the thick smoke and raining ash brought a great malevolent darkness with it.

Thank you Endlesshorizon, Diti and Betsy.

Endlesshorizon, I wish I could say that human efforts could control the fires, but I'd be dreaming. Weather created, weather driven, the best we can do is try to 'manage' them to avoid damage to private properties and harm to humans.

We have had a dramatic change in weather the last 24 hours, it may signal the doom of this summer's wildfires. An inch of rain the past 24 hours!

Katy, I look at that and read your description...holy cow. Are you gonna be ok? Is there any end to this monster? Or is it just going to burn until the weather changes?

Oooooh..."malevolent darkness" great descriptive phrase! This makes the hair on my arms stand up. You have really captured the horror of this cloud of smoke.

I've lived in Alaska since 1969. I love this wild land. The extremes of the far north shape and affect every living thing. Extremes of weather, elevation, daylight hours, isolation, flora and fauna, nothing in Nature is insignificant.I have a Davis Vantage Pro weather station, uploading to Wunderground, (Turks on the Tundra) the National Weather Service, the Citizen Weather Observation Program and MADIS (Meteorological Assimilation Data Ingest System).
