Tok, AK (Current Weather Conditions)

Caption: This is a snow bunting, (Plectrophenax nivalis), a male by his striking white plumage. Most white of any small bird in Alaska. A few have been known to hang around all winter, but most us us think of them as the first 'migrator' to arrive in very early spring.

The squabbling of the redpolls was brought to a halt when this bird arrived in the wind and driving snow today. I have never had one of these visit any of my feeders, never.

Thanks Sharon, Kat, Peter, Wilma, Newenglandlight, Julia, Heidrun, Picatso and Charlotte!

Kat thanks for sharing my excitement! :) Yes Wilma it does make the lingering winter just a bit easier to bear. Peter that's really interesting about them being stranded in the last ice age! Cool! Charlotte it is a BUNTING day!

When the Ice went north last Ice age, some of these guys got left behind and still nest on the tops of mountains in Scotland, never seen one at a feeder though, great photo.

Thank you Betsy and James.

These are quite common here this time of year, on their migration to the high Arctic.

We have seen them (rarely) year around, but that's not at all usual. It is also unusual for them to come to the feeder. He has become 'boss bird' at the feeder, the redpolls make way for him.

Gorgeous shot Katie! We get them here in the winter but I have never seen them visit my feeders either. They are normally found in open fields or along the beaches when they're here. Congratulations!!!
