Was this bird crow sized? I am leaning more towards juvenile Sharp-shinned, but at this age it is sooo hard to tell except by size. Crow sized could indicate female Sharpie, but can also indicate male Cooper's and this one has a head that's about the right shape of roundness for a Coop. Only trouble for me? The length of the talons and the color at the tip of the tail and the relatively short beak (in comparison with a Coop). So I am going to say, if this bird was actually smaller than a crow, that it is probably a male Sharp-shinned, first year :) They're about the size of a jay :)
Feather thank you for the link, yes they are difficult to tell apart. This guy was as big as a crow, I know there are adult Coopers at this park so I'm thinking this is probably one of their babies... I just love those "hearts" :)
