To ERLBarna!
Most of churches built in Romanesque style (thick walls and small windows) like this one in Inowlodz were meant to be defensible structures. However there were no monks living near this church, it served as a parish church for the local community before it became insufficient in terms od space (only some 20-30 people could attend a mass standing inside). Originally founded in 1086 by king Wladyslaw Herman of Poland as a sign of gratefulness to St Giles for answered prayers when king's first son Boleslaw was born.

Was the bell tower meant to be a defensible refuge, like the towers that monks built in Ireland to outlast Viking raiders?

This is lovely. The height of the steeple, along with the wall running down the hillside, creates a harmonic whole. Wspaniała kompozycja!
