Discovered this tiny little fungi on an old painted fence rail. I don't think have seen these before now.

Birds-nest fungus, not uncommon in wood-chip mulch and other organic matter. What look like eggs are little sacs of spores which splash out in the rain and will make new plants.

I knew if you saw this you could tell us
what they are. I had guess as much about
the "little eggs" in the "baskets". Maybe
that should have been my title..."Little
Eggs In Baskets".

You're welcome, Julia! Strange thing, I had put up a different stock picture last night when I first saw this, even more of a dead ringer for your picture than this one. But this morning I went to change one word in my added comment -- not the data for the picture itself -- and the whole picture disappeared when I submitted! I could not get it to go back into place, so I had to substitute this one. Strange goings-on! But I recognized the fungus immediately. I see them often in my own mulch piles; they seem to favor wood to grow on.

Your posting experience is strange and I
have found similar odd things, as you know.

We have plenty of wood around for all sorts
of fungi to feed on. I was hoping for some
good ones in or near the log deck, but there
were none there. Then I found these, as I
said, on an old fence piece.
